some people are retarded..thats way tooo close for safety...been almost that close several times but I never tried to get my yak on top ..that's just dumb and if a wildlife officer is anywhere around you can get charges for harassing a protected animal....to each their own tho.... I was hoping it would bitchslap em with its tail or send em flying.....yeehaw

I bet those kayakers wouldn't take too kindly if some stranger decided to sit on them on a bus, or a subway, and yet they have no problem parking their fat asses on that whale.

Deserved a tail smack imo...

Ahhhh...you guys are being a bit too harsh on 'em I think. Yeah, they took a bit of a risk, but damn man...who among us wouldn't be tempted if we were in that same position. Especially if we were buzzed, and enjoyed communing with nature.

Plus, I think part of the original distance between whale and kayak was shortened by the whale itself...those kayakers I think were surprised by how close the whale got. And, nothing bad happened. They took a bit of a risk and presented no danger to the beasts below. I think I may have done the same thing they did, and I am by nature a fairly cautious fellow. Some things are just worth taking a risk for.

I would find it amazing if Stoned-trout could keep himself at a "safe" distance.

Also, in that environment, how would a kayaker have any idea if there wasn't actually a giant floating directly below their kayak at that very moment?

didn't look to me like they paddled up over it, looked more like the whale saw them & came over to check them out. I've seen smaller species on videos in the gulf of Baja swim right up to the whale-watching boats. they are just as curious about us as most of us are about them. smart creatures, whales...

Hello all,

That was way kewl.

While swimming in S. Carolina once had a dolphin get within touching distance of me in just a few feet of water.

I don't t think the were harassing the animal and I don't think whales are aggressive by nature (excluding mother/infant).

It was kewl, that is something you will remember the rest of your life. Worth the risk...hell yeah.

It's not about risk, it's about respect.

Dumb ass human beings often times show NO respect for our fellow critters, and when it turns out bad for the human, what happens? The critter gets hunted down and killed....all because some dipshit failed to respect the personal space of a critter. That shit happens all the damn time in the wild, in zoos, and even with peoples' pets.

While it's true that whales are damn smart and tend not to be prone to aggression towards humans, they still deserve the same respect we would ask of any other human, or pet, when it comes to personal space.

Now a bunch of morons are going to see this video and think it's cool to try to camp their kayak on a whale, and eventually somebody is going to get tail smashed like a fly for being stupid.

We all deserve respect and personal space, whether we be man, critter, or whale.

What if the whale approached the kayakers? It did seem the distance between the two happened way to quick for it to be the kayakers alone. Whales are intelligent creatures and have curiosity and are known to approach boats, as Armedhippy mentioned above. I think you're over reacting. I didn't see anything in that video that even approached disrespect.

I get whales coming to check me out all the time while fishing off-shore. They intentionally come to the boat and sometimes roll on their sides and stick that big basketball sized eye out of the water and take a good look, just a few feet away.
Ive had them suddenly come to one side of the boat just a few feet away and take a look with one eye then barrel-roll directly under the boat and come up and take a peak on the other side.
