Cloning in soil?

I was wondering how many members clone straight to soil? I havnt had much luck with clones and am going to try this method but have been reading mixed results. I will have root hormone (powder) tomarrow and need to take cuttings asap. Let me know if you have any tips or experience with cloning this way.

check out the Thread ^^^^ right above yours. Cloning with JJSCORPIO. The reason you haven't found much information about cloning directly into soil is because there is a fairly inexpensive, simple and most important successful way to take clones.

Hey guys, I checked out JJ's thread and decided to pick up some rapid rooter plugs and rootone w/fungicide but local grow store didnt have any rootone. I grabbed the plugs but was wondering if I could use Shultz Takeroot instead with good results.

Hi moegreen,

give it a try. bet it will work with what you got from the store.

As far as soil cloning, it works good with woody plants. The rest will usually (if not always) rot.

I clone in soil. Last time, in 12, just 2 died.
I mix clonex with whater (50/50) in a very small cilindric container, then cut them fast and put them in thet container for 2-3 min.
Use a razorblade to make clean cuts, and the more stems you have to cut and put under soil, the better cause it will be more rooting spots.

Next stage is the delicate one...
You have to provide them a very humid ambient, but not keep them wet.
Remember, if they get all the whater they want from the air (pulverizing, ...), your just latening root devellopment... Thats when they rot!!
If you experiment, you will soon be mastering it in your own conditions.
Good luck!

I've seen Rootone at Orchard Supply Hardware and Ace Hardware

I've never cloned str8 into soil but I'd like to learn also. Seems a lot better than using rockwool with a soil setup but thats worked for me in the past.

I find that using a heating wire under the pots helps alot.Zip-lock bags over the pots, but not touching the leaves, make a good humidor.

Wal Mart rooting hormone works fine.24 hour light.Check and spray them them once a day.It takes 2 to 3 weeks.

Well I am going to take cuttings tonight and give the rapid rooter plugs a try. Its time to flip the switch on the girls so after I snip I'll make the switch. From my understanding I can still take more cuttings within the next few weeks after going on 12/12 correct? If so I'll give the straight to soil method a try as well. Hopefully between the two methods and the 20 or so cuttings I should be able to get atleast 5 to root. Does taking cuttings and switching to flower immediatly adversley affect the bud I'll get or the clones I'll take?

Do you mean rooting your clones under 12/12?
If not, the answer is no and no!
Good luck!

No not rooting under 12/12, gonna put the rest of the room on 12's. I suppose I could call them mothers because I know there all female but only because they are starting to auto flower on me.

Keep them covered, and the soil warm and you should be able to get at least 80% to root. It's not a good idea to take clones from a flowering plant.it stresses them,so cut them all now.

Using the little peat pots that you expand with warm water works for me. You buy a bag from Wal Mart for cheap. These things are not as messy as soil, especially when transplanting.

When you clone in rock wool you can go either hydro or soil. You can also judge how well the root structure is developing using wool or peat pots without disturbing the roots.

I took cuttings the night before last and it looks like all but one or two arnt dead or dying already. I didnt have clean or sterile scissors and may have left a little more leaf than should have but still wouldnt expect to have this bad of a result. Gonna try to take another cutting or two off of each plant that I switched to 12/12 last night and post some pics, maybe you guys can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

It sounds like they dried out. They can last in nothing but water for days. Keep the little darlings very wet.

Nobody has ever accused me of having a green thumb. But I enjoy growing my own.

The pics may not be how a real pro would do it, but it sure as hell works for me.

Yep, all clones dead/dying. Not one of them standin and are all wilted and laying over. I threw my lights on 12's the other night and dont know if I should take more cuttings or not. I read a few threads that say i'll lose bud by takings cuttings this late. Anyone else know or have experience cloning this late or can vouch that i'll lose final weight? Also, I am using 3 gal. pots and arnt root bound yet but figure in another month or so I will be. Should I transplant to something bigger now or wait?

Do you have them covered in some sort of humidity controlled dealie?Like a Zip-Lock bag?If not they'll die.Cut the lower branches to clone. If they've only been 12/12 for a few days, they should be fine. The energy that made them grow will be transfered to the top colas.Unless you go totally ape-shit with the scissors, you won't loose any weight.

In Marijuana Growers Guide by Mel Frank and Ed Rosenthal, a chart talks about the best rooting success per medium. The best results were obtained with a 50/50 blend of vermiculite and perlite.

Super cheap method.

3 ice cube trays - $1 at dollar store
3 shoe box sized clear plastic bins with lids - $1 each at walmart.
4 cu. ft. of verm - $12
4cu. ft. of perlite - $12.

Nearly a lifetime of cloning materials, for the personal grower. Drill one hole in each ice cube cup, fill with your mix, and put one tray in each of the shoe boxs, upside down, so the clear part of the tub is on top. Voila. Super cheap, super easy cloning. Since the cubes are fairly small, once the plant roots, its only a couple more days before the whole cube gets colonized and comes out in a neat plug.
