Clone Q

I have a question about cloning. I have taken cuttings about a week ago, and I gelled them and put them in my rapid rooters, then into the dome. but I am having trouble, this happened last time. They are out in my little outdoor room/shed. They just arent doing anything, and some look like they are dying. Why? The temp outside gets about 40-50 at night. What is the perfect temperature for making cuttings start rooting? I hate not being able to plant them. I have like 5 different kinds cut and about 6 of each. And what is the percentage of average cuttings rooting? On average if I have the climate right. I am new to this, so this is my trial and error period.

Thanx Everyone :pointlaug

I think it's your temps.

I used RRs with no fuss, no backward nail poking or sitting them upside down.

Cut, Dip in rooting gel, stick in RR, under the dome and forget about it. I hardly watered, never sprayed the clones, and had nice roots in 7-10 days.

I also used a heating mat set to 75 because it's cold at night in my cab room.

you dont want a lot of fluctuation in your temps...78 to 80 degrees is perfect

I got one of those mats with the temp dial from the hydro store. Keep the temp set at ~85f and the humidity dome lightly misted twice a day. Keep the rooters moist but not soaked and you shoud have roots in 7-14 days depending on strain. Right now your temps are to cold.

Could one of you give me a balpark cost on a dial heatmat? I think I have seen one at my local hydroshop but didn't check the price.
Thanx

A little pricey.. actually. The heat mat is around $15-20, and the silly thermostat (which should be built-into the mat, IMO) is around $30.

well the link is for $34 for the whole shabang

It does not include a thermostat, which is the most expensive/important part. A tray and dome can be had for under 10, and the mat around 15-20, puts me less than that link does, locally bought though.

Your link brought me to the top of the page so I was reading the first three products which do not. My mistake, if you scroll all the way down there are newer mats with the thermo built in... way expensive, and I don't know how much I like the idea of my thermostat being pre-set and unchangeable for me. They look nice though.

Not being troublesome this is the controller I've got. I like to dial in my own temp setting not something preprogrammed. The mat listed will plug in to an outlet and heat up but offers no control-you get what you get. The thermostat listed at the bottom of the link list for 49.94 and allows you to dial in your optimum temp.

I think I did get mine cheaper and that is pricey. Been using it for several years and still working great. If you are gonna clone it's worth the investment imo.
