clone only males?

well as i was reading over a thread asking about clone only strains i had an idea,
if there are stand out females that carry special characteristics or rare phenos of strains that are used in breeding,

shouldnt there be clone only males that carry sought after characteristics? when u look at breeding anything other than green, the males used are just as or more important than the females that are bred...so why arnt there elite "studs" being passed around next to the elite bitches to make elite strains?

if this has been answered before then feel free to flame me, i dont care :muahaha:

There are clone-only males. DJ Short's special Blueberry male has been down the farm with more ladies than anyone would care to mention. I think he finally expired from exhaustion recently, but in that time has sired something like ten new strains (more?), in conjunction with Legends, Spice of Life and others.

Sorry had too... This sounds legit. I have a male that I grew last year outdoors and it turned black... not purple, not dark dark blue... but black...

The jar the flowers sit in now smells sweet... along the lines of honey... it is so deep, rich and hard to describe...
My first round of growing ever when I flowered my plant, I remember throwing away one of the female plants because I was told if it had crystals it was female if it didn't it was male... I let it die in the dark, only to find 3 sets of dried pistils on the dead carcass of my female... but the male grew for 3 weeks before I got aggravated and ate him... I just picked up the pot, leaned over and bit it clean off at the stem. The crystals on it, to what I can remember where layered on the fella. Sorry, thats what I call a stoner story...
You live... You learn...
Peace,

Male keepers are worth just as much, if not more, than good females.
It's just far more difficult for your average grower to find them.

For a female, the proof's right there, you've just smoked it.
For a male, you'd need to grow out a whole bunch, then polinate a control female, sample the results, and you still wouldn't be 100% certain. It sounds like a lot of work.
Others "reverse" males and try them like that - again loads of work and not totally reliable results.

OTOH any fool can maintain a few good keeper mums - I know this one does
I wish I had the equivalent keeper dads too, but can't see how that will happen without a dedicated breeding facility.

It's nice to see some talking about males. I mean where do people think quality beans come from? A good pop is hard to find. Here's mine I grew outdoors last summer. It's a double land race cross. I got some of his offspring about 30 days into veg so we'll soon see what he brought to the table.

An easier way is to label and clone your males, make hash or other concentrate with them, and sample for taste and potency.

That plus their growth characteristics, and you have a pretty good idea of which ones you want to keep.

As the others said. Elevator man gave a good example of a male that served well, and now that it's gone, about half a dozen strains in DJ Short's line will have to go. Another breeder that use one single male extensively is Soma, who crosses just about every strain he makes with his afghani/hawaiian male, given to him by Shantibaba. When it croaks, which will happen one day, there will be no more NYCD, Lavender, Afghan Delight, Amnesia Haze, Amethyst Bud, Free Tibet, well, you get the picture. It is harder to identify a male (than a female) that consistently passes on potent quality off-spring (and many good breeders seem to have their own ideas what traits to look for in males), so once they find one it's worth gold, and they tend to stick around for long and be used a lot. More than one breeder has built his (her? are there any female breeders, apart from Ms.Grat3ful? :D) career one one single male.
In fact, the narrowing down in the gene pool that breeding has experienced in the last decades is not only because of stabilized staple strains such as Skunk, or clone onlys passed on from growroom to growroom, but also because of the persistent use of a small number of proven males.

uhm ... , you forgot the whole point of testing the offspring from " your already smoked / potential keeper female " ...

Lets say , your starting with 25 plants per gender , from those 25 female its easier to determine your keeper upon preference and potency , or maybe yield ,etc ... , its personal pref :)

those 25 males are another story .. , first up you start narrowing down the #'s to those plants which exhibit your desired stature/smell/resination ... , the remaining males will be numbered again ... , now you have to cross every single male to one and the same female , which in the best case is tested and unrealted to the male side , so you know which traits will be shared from the female side ...

When all crosses are done , you can plant them in different lots to see which male gave the most desirable traits to the offspring ...

good growing

I grew out some kalimist and the first male i found i used to make more seeds with crossing it to Bog sweetcindy99 and to kalimist female.i did not know what to look out for in males but when i grew it out it was sticky with resin and had a haze smell to it and was stought .i have grown only a sample of the seeds but every one is covered in sticky resin.to day i put 4 more seeds of kalimist in a cup to grow out .and if i get a male i will use it in a cross of c99 x kalimist.becues i have not heard of any one crossing the 2 .but i have heard of super silver haze x c99 and it looks good to me.i think the c99 will make kali a more fruity sativa.

He also crossed all of his strains to a g13xsuper haze that he got in a pack of seeds from neville

Why didn't DJ just clone his famous male stud a dozen times or so, and maintain a mini dude ranch?

Did he let it go on purpose in hopes of finding a better selection?

Dj gifted pollen, and nobody knows what the male looked like but Red...i believe attn is somewhere else; Ulysses is right; Dj is sooo busy to even communicate, but I Have a feeling that the next gold fingered King will be more than JUsT Sativa leaning!!!

LOL...that was the first male I ever grew out and crossed him to the mom below. He's from 10+ year old seed stock (Purple Afghani x Oaxacan). Mom is a clone only strain called J1 (Jack Herer x Skunk #1). The guy was never topped. I'm testing some of the beans I made right now and should have em sexed very soon. I've got a pheno like mom, one like dad and there's one, 1 out of 7, that's like neither but appears to be a stout little full blown indica.

…eight years later the thread continues…

Who's holding breeding studs these days?
I've been daydreaming of how productive one could be with the aid of a genuine top quality breeding male, it doesn't even seem like all that much work to find him, considering the possible benefits. If you have a truly great male, how did you find him?
Also no mention of Space Dude yet? WTF thread is already 8 years old
