cleaning buckets for use

I am able to get 5gal buckets from some local resturants that have been used for such things as pickles and relish. they are free which is alot cheaper than buying them, but how can i clean them enough for use in a bio setup? i have washed them out but there is still a dill smell and im sure that means that something is in the plastic that is going to leach into the water while im using them. any suggestions will help thanx

I doubt anything will happen when you use a bucket that smells like pickles. Its not like you got the buckets from a chemical plant or anything.

But if it bothers you alot, then do what i did a long time ago. I basically filled the bucket to the rim and dropped in 1 load of laundry detergent. Then i mixed it up and left it overnight in my bath tub. The bucket looked alot cleaner and smelled nice too.

You might try scrubbing them with some baking soda to eliminate the pickle smell.

Yeah, I like bleach too, just fill with water add bleach, soak, rinse a couple times.

id be more concerned with bleach residue than pickle residue. bleach leaves a film if you let it soak to long.
