Clay soil

You will need to add course sand if you can get it. Also adding compost to the mix will improve the soil as well. Don't just do a small area the plants will have trouble adjusting to the clay soil around that area. You will also need to check the PH and adjust as necessary. Basically your going to need to improve drainage of the clay. This maybe possible depending on who large and area you are working with.

I don't see how this would work. I'm digging a hole for the plant. Once it is finished if I fill it with sand it will drain incredibly fast to the bottom and then hit clay where the water will sit for hours. What do you mean by a small area? I can't exactly plow an entire field here, individual holes is the only way to go.

I grow all kinds of plants, not just cannabis. Some wetland plants want the ground wet constantly. Most cactus would die quickly if you watered them every day. Some plants will put up with conditions that other plants won't. Just like you cannot expect a pot plant to thrive in the shade, you can't dig a little hole in clay and expect it to grow there because you want it to. The roots need to grow to supply the plant with nutrients that you will provide. "Well drained soil" is what you will see on the description for growing most plants. The roots should never sit in water long, or get totally dry for long. You will have to create conditions that the plant will thrive in.

dig a hole, line it, put regular soil in....or go grab some perlite or something like it, mix it in with your "clay" soil....

I don't see how lining the hole would solve the problem at all because again during heavy rains the water will collect in the bottom of the hole and cause root rot. Mixing the clay with amendments seems like it should work but do you have an exact recipe for clay?

You need to apply gypsum or ag lime to break up the clay. You will need to either dig a much deeper hole, or do what I did--go with raised beds.

No exact recipe for clay, you'll need a good soil analysis to figure out how to deal with YOUR clay.
