City public works sorting through trash for recycling violations

City Workers To Randomly Sift Trash
Trash Cans Subject To Random Inspections

Bristol officials said the city is getting serious about recycling and that it plans to check what residents are putting in trash cans before dumping it into the truck.

Video: Trash Cans Subject To Random Inspections

Workers from the city's Department of Public Works will soon begin randomly sifting through residents' garbage and writing citations to those who put recyclables in the trash.

"I'm not here to be anybody's pain," said David Oakes, the DPW's solid waste and recycling operations analyst. "I'm here to help, and my ultimate goal is to save taxpayers money, not to give them grief."

The city has reported a recent decrease in recyclables. It costs the city about half as much to dispose of recyclables than it does garbage, the DPW said.

If a resident continues to put recyclable items in the trash can and not the recycling bin, city officials said they will be issued fines.

"I'll go out there (and) if there's a notice of non-recycling, I'll go out there and look in the barrel," Oakes said. "It's not a glamorous job but somebody's got to do it, and I don't mind."

City officials said recyclable items should go into recycling bins, including:

* Cardboard
* Office paper
* Newspaper and magazines
* Catalogs
* Plastic No. 1 or No. 2 food and beverage containers
* Paper milk/juice cartons

"As of today, it's a $92 fine per occurrence," Oakes said. "So, if you have a deep pocket, I can keep coming every other week, but I'd much rather come out and educate and get that person on board. It's much easier to get what you want with honey than with vinegar."

just a heads up incase some still throw out their waste in the trash, they might find more than a recycling violation.

A fine for putting garbage in your recyling: understandable. A fine for putting recycleables in your garbage: rediculous. It's the right thing to do, but bullying people into doigng it by making it the law and fining them if they dont?

But of course thats not the reason this was posted here. Be careful what you throw away curbside! I think that's a rediculous violation of privacy to ANYONE anyway. Maybe they'll change thier minds after getting stuck by a syringe or two.

-I was worried more about someone digging through what is, essentialy, still "my stuff" the courts said that was illigal for 'other people' but the trash co can do it and write you a ticket, bogus!

Put the leafy matter in a 5 gallon bucket, add a couple quarts of bleach, and water to the full mark. Shortly it will be "MUSH that you can FLUSH". Make sure you put the lid on, but not airtight. I burn the thicker (dry) main stalks in the wood stove with no noticeable odor , and use the bucket system as noted, most of the time. Stir it periodically, it will speed up the breakdown of the plant material.

PS: The bleach prevents fermentation and controls odor.

haha how ridiculous is that... they did a study here not long ago in the newspaper and most of the things that get recycled end up getting thrown away further down the line anyway

i get fines all the time for putting noin recylables in recylables bags, it is common practice in the big rotten apple. Then again all the garbage goes into compactors so they could never pin one item to anyone only a building of 500+.

Recycling is for the most part doing more harm to the environment than not. Only aluminum is worth recycling. Everything else is better off in a land fill.

More resources are wasted shipping, sorting, bureaucracy regarding legislation, etc than will ever be recovered recycling.

The reason in the beginning for recycling was because of a fear that America was running out of landfill space. This was proven to be an obvious lie, and yet everyone is still recycling thinking that its doing good, when its actually causing more resources to be wasted than ever before.

I can go to several places in my town with a truckload of cardboard and get cash money. Not going to get rich that way, but it WAY more than pays for the time and the gas. And scrap metal? That shit is heavy-you can actually make decent coin on that.
Do you think all those businesses would be paying out money, and staying in business for years, if there were no market for recycled materials? Do you think you could get paid for cardboard if it were cheaper to just trash it?
Someday all that plastci is going to be worth something too.
The main exception is glass-most places it isn't worth much (unless there is a bottle bill).

One problem with what your thinking zymos, HOW are those companies making money? Government subsidies out the ying yang. Recycling paper does nothing but LOSE money, its been proven over and over again. We arn't even low on trees, we have more forest biomass than ever before. Sawdust, that used to be turned into paper, is now just burned, fortunately some of it in generators, but most not. That is all thanks to recycling paper. Recycled paper is also full of poisons and small shards of metal, and requires a lot of bleach to whiten.

Plastic requires more oil energy to recycle than just to make new plastic... we will one day run out, but probably not any time soon, and probably not before nanotechnology makes plastic obsolete.

Subsidies are screwing the tax payer over, why are our taxes paying for this?

There are no government subsidies for this. I'm not talking about municipal recycling programs, I'm talking about commercial operations. They wouldn't be in business if there were no market for the things they pay money for, and they aren't just buying stuff because one day it MAY be worth something.

But I see you have a very negative opinion of the whole idea. So do a lot of those right wing think tank type organizations...

I don't think anyone can go through your trash, especially for the purpose of enforcing laws.
I remember studying a Supreme court case where they decided one needed a warrent.
It was still determined your property until after they put it in the garbage truck AND THEN mixed it with the compactor into the rest of the trash.

Actually, this is interesting, because anyone ANYONE can look through trash. as long as it is on the street side, it is public domain. weird rules i know. but that is why you dont but anything too incriminating in there. you dont need a warrant for that or anything.
sucks

zymos said "There are no government subsidies for this."

Seriously doubt it, even public recycling centers that get their cardboard for FREE, are losing money hand over fist. Governments subsidies are way more common than you probably realize, even computer game companies here in Canada get subsidized.

I seriously doubt your claim that they have no government subsidies backing either them or whom they sell to is true.

"The reasons are straightforward; the money spent collecting, transporting and reprocessing frequently make the recycled material more expensive than the original material."

"However, because recycling is uneconomic and recycled materials must be sold at a loss to manufacturers, landfilled or dumped in the Third World, the recycling procedure must be subsidized — and nearly always is, either by industry itself or by government."

"A survey of 17 towns and districts in the US which operated “successful” recycling schemes showed that none of them came anywhere near to covering their costs through the sale of recuperated material, and several of them failed to sell anything at all. All of them were subsidized by local or State taxes and grants, except for one town which exacted a mandatory removal charge. No indication is given in the report as to how much of the recyclable material finally found its way into a new product, and how much was eventually incinerated, landfilled or sold abroad."

Where did YOU get the crazy notion that we have less forest biomass than ever before?

Michigan is at an all time high since 1935.

Here in Alberta, were losing all our pine trees to pine beetles from BC. Pine beetles are wiping out forest faster than all of our entire forestry industry could ever process. Why waste energy recycling when its cheaper and less harmful to the environment to just process more forest.

[Verse 1]
Let's talk about dead body disposal
My proposal take the corpse to the bathtub
And drain the blood out of the bastard
Strip ya self nude first so you don't get blood on ya new shirt
And cut the ****in' corpse up like a butcher to meat kid
And put the pieces inside trash bags
So she'll be wreaking like a fags ass
With flesh covered in leeches
And throw the bags away
In various trash bins in different areas
This shit's hilarious
Nobody notices some asshole taking out the garbage
Who would know it's a carcass?
Even if they were focusing 'cause the plastic bag is dark kid
And even the nosy bitch wouldn't open it, it make no sense
And if you do it just before a trash pick up
The bodies hauled away before it decays and stinks up
It won't be noticed but literally turns up other shit
And ya bag is in the middle buried right under it
Especially if you double-bagged it
Ya victim'll stay a faggot in fragments forever stagnet

[Chorus]
Dead Body Disposal
For those that don't know what to do after ya foes are killed
Shit could get messy when the blood flow spills
You never know when you might need to know skills
In body disposal it's no frills
Dead Body Disposal
Are you interested in hearing my proposal?

[Verse 2]
Bodies begin to stink within an hour of death
And if it's warm outside then it's quicker for the sour stench to leak out
the flesh
So think about the steps
You taking killing and be willing to consider the best
Be extra careful and grab an aerosol can of pepper spray
to coat the pieces the smell is unbearable
Hold the first layer of bag beautifully
that'll keep animals from tearing open the bag to get to the meat
Squirrels, dogs, and birds
Officers with dogs that smell won't find shit when they thrown off the scent
You could hang a **** upside down in ya tub
And slit his throat from ear to ear to remove a large amount of blood
Most of it'll gush out on its own at once But to get that last couple of pints drained work his arms like pumps
For dismemberment gentlemen I recommend
heavy duty brawn saws that cut through gendleums like pendulums
But if you want to take your time don't rush it
either cut each piece off like Pizza Hut pizza with a rusty cleaver
Then put each piece up in a freezer
Take out the trash in a couple of days the stench of decomposition's meager
And make sure there's no incriminating papers in the bag
Letters, receipts, anything with ya name they'll trace ya

I know it's obvious but you'd be amazed at how easy it is
to be sloppy with this even the Mafia slips

[Chorus]
Dead Body Disposal
For those that don't know what to do after ya foes are killed
Shit could get messy when the blood flow spills
You never know when you might need to know skills
In body disposal it's no frills

[Hook]
Let's talk about death baby
Disintegration of flesh you'll see
Let's talk about all the good things and the bad things
In hacking up ya meat

Let's talk about death baby
Disintegration of flesh you'll see
Let's talk about all the good things and the bad things
In hacking up ya meat
Let's talk about death!

[Brick Top from Snatch]

[Verse 3]
There's more choices to choose kid
Bury the corpse in the ground, bury it at sea or the pieces get distributed
When using the ground a shallow grave isn't allowed
'Cause the corpse'll be found when the stench of it lingers out
Make sure it's six feet deep or more
Construction sites work in formented
In what's cemented suspended beneath the floor
Using the sea has its potential sequentionally
The sea destroys all evidence eventually
But make sure that you tie a weight to the body to keep it from floating
around and being discovered by mistake
Drop it as far from shore as possible otherwise it'll pop up at low tide or
be seen by some fisherman's opticals
Distributing! Body parts is riveting
I explained it in verse one forgive me if I begin again
A wood chipper turns a corpse into chopped meat
Spread it all over ya grass then water it down properly
Within a few days the cadaver's fertilizer
Your advisor's taught you ways of covering up murders wiser
Regardless how you tried these methods
Be careful with prints and rented equipment use cash and fake id's

[Chorus]
Dead Body Disposal
For those that don't know what to do after ya foes are killed
Shit could get messy when the blood flow spills
You never know when you might need to know skills
In body disposal it's no frills
Dead Body Disposal
Are you interested in hearing my proposal?

Garbage Police? Yes, in San Francisco

Posted on: Friday, 1 August 2008, 18:00 CDT

Failing to sort household or business trash in San Francisco could result in fines of up to $1,000 under a proposal offered by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

The plan requiring sorting of trash would be the United States' first mandatory recycling and composting law, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday.

A draft prepared by the city's Environment Department would direct garbage collectors to inspect the trash its in the proper blue, black or green bin. The program is being offered to limit the amount of food and foliage finding their way into the city-contracted landfill in Alameda County, where it takes up space and decomposes into methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

If we're truly going to be the city we promote ourselves to be, a world-class, 21st century city that advances its values and principles, we're going to have to try new things, Newsom said. People are used to doing things a certain way. And when you change that, they say it can't be done. Well, we've proved them wrong.

Critics say Newsom's plan is unworkable and characterize it as another intrusion of a city government that banned smoking in parks and feeding pigeons in most of the city.
