NDAA Would Allow Citizens To Be Imprisoned Without Charge Or Trial

News

While this post is not directly related to cannabis, we thought it was important enough to share. Please see below for important information from The American Civil Liberties Union:

While nearly all Americans head to family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Senate is gearing up for a vote on Monday or Tuesday that goes to the very heart of who we are as Americans. The Senate will be voting on a bill that will direct American military resources not at an enemy shooting at our military in a war zone, but at American citizens and other civilians far from any battlefield — even people in the United States itself.

Senators need to hear from you, on whether you think your front yard is part of a “battlefield” and if any president can send the military anywhere in the world to imprison civilians without charge or trial.

The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.

The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing.

I know it sounds incredible. New powers to use the military worldwide, even within the United States? Hasn’t anyone told the Senate that Osama bin Laden is dead, that the president is pulling all of the combat troops out of Iraq and trying to figure out how to get combat troops out of Afghanistan too? And American citizens and people picked up on American or Canadian or British streets being sent to military prisons indefinitely without even being charged with a crime. Really? Does anyone think this is a good idea? And why now?

The answer on why now is nothing more than election season politics. The White House, the Secretary of Defense, and the Attorney General have all said that the indefinite detention provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act are harmful and counterproductive. The White House has even threatened a veto. But Senate politics has propelled this bad legislation to the Senate floor.

But there is a way to stop this dangerous legislation. Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) is offering the Udall Amendment that will delete the harmful provisions and replace them with a requirement for an orderly Congressional review of detention power. The Udall Amendment will make sure that the bill matches up with American values.

In support of this harmful bill, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield” and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial “American citizen or not.” Another supporter, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) also declared that the bill is needed because “America is part of the battlefield.”

The solution is the Udall Amendment; a way for the Senate to say no to indefinite detention without charge or trial anywhere in the world where any president decides to use the military. Instead of simply going along with a bill that was drafted in secret and is being jammed through the Senate, the Udall Amendment deletes the provisions and sets up an orderly review of detention power. It tries to take the politics out and put American values back in.

In response to proponents of the indefinite detention legislation who contend that the bill “applies to American citizens and designates the world as the battlefield,” and that the “heart of the issue is whether or not the United States is part of the battlefield,” Sen. Udall disagrees, and says that we can win this fight without worldwide war and worldwide indefinite detention.

The senators pushing the indefinite detention proposal have made their goals very clear that they want an okay for a worldwide military battlefield, that even extends to your hometown. That is an extreme position that will forever change our country.

Now is the time to stop this bad idea. Please urge your senators to vote YES on the Udall Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.

Thank you for making people aware of this. These political whores in our government can't wait to unfold their totalitarian police state and this is it! Once everyone figures out that the government is run by the six mega banks along with Goldman Sachs who cause the booms and busts of our economy, and their army of evil corporations like GE and Monsanto. Just about every politician especially these puppets campaigning for the republican nomination are bought and paid for with the exception of Ron Paul. Pay close attention to world events. These f**King demons are trying to start world war 3 and collapse the economy at the same time just as they introduce their police state control grid. They love attacking us on multiple levels at once. This banking oligarch knows it's just a matter of time until the population becomes aware of whats really going on, so they are moving very quickly to strip away whats left of our freedom. I know we will stand up united as free thinking sentient beings with inalienable rights given to us from god and not some f**king psychotic control freak government controlled by a banking oligarch! History repeats.

If your ever in Washington D.C. look up the Federal Reserve Bank in the white pages, they aren't listed in the blue pages which lists all government agencies, they are listed in the regular white pages right next to federal express.

that's because they are not a government organization...

they are A PRIVATELY HELD CORPORATION !!!!

Thomas Jefferson strongly warned us about this shit, and we got so fat, dumb and complacent it happened anyway...

Thomas Jefferson's Warning To America

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

Here's another great book about the unconstitutional Fed "The Creature from Jekyll Island" by G. Edward Griffin.

We need to stop these control freaks from destroying what's left of our republic. I'm glad to know you guys are awake it's good to meet some friends on the path to enlightenment. The majority of the population are just followers they never think for themselves they only follow. We need to lead them to freedom again!

i'd posted the ACLUE link a couple days ago, it was deleted, "no non-MJ political threads"

you can use this here link to write to your politico, if you are entertained by such notions

https://secure.aclu.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3865&s_subsrc=fixNDAA

if you dig around you can find a pdf of walter bowart's "operation mindcontrol" online in pdf format. few people have an idea of how insidious things are. for a clue to that, google james walbert and wired magazine, and make sure you've got a lot of time for followup reading.

as you say, you can tell people all you want. barnum's "fool most of the people most of the time" holds true (fortunately so does the ancillary).

if anyone checks the james walbert/WIRED magazine link, check this video.. it may seem like sensationalism.. it's not. i've been dealing with the T.I. community for years and this is part of the reality of modern life. it worked for stalin, it worked for the stasi, and it works for modern FUSION groups in the u.s. and elsewhere. i don't think the law matters much because covert electronic harassment happens, whether it's legal or not. the only thing that's going to change that is widespread awareness so these things aren't blanketed with denial. because this law doesn't matter - if they want you gone, you're gone. enough public figures in the counterculture have demonstrated this over the years for us to know it's true.

I wish they'd just tell us what the end game is and get it the fuck over with. But I guess it's easier to take away our rights slowly, 1 at a time, than to just wipe them them out in 1 fail swoop. The Constitution is making some mighty fine toilet paper up on the hill these day. But then I guess if "you don't have anything to hide, why would you be worried about it?"

Battlefield America: U.S. Citizens Face Indefinite Military Detention in Defense Bill Before Senate

The Senate is set to vote this week on a Pentagon spending bill that could usher in a radical expansion of indefinite detention under the U.S. government.

A provision in the National Defense Authorization Act would authorize the military to jail anyone it considers a terrorism suspect — anywhere in the world — without charge or trial.

The measure would effectively extend the definition of what is considered the military’s "battlefield" to anywhere in the world, even within the United States.

Its authors, Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan and Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, have been campaigning for its passage in a bipartisan effort.

But the White House has issued a veto threat, with backing from top officials including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and FBI Director Robert Mueller.

“This would be the first time since the McCarthy era that the United States Congress has tried to do this,” says our guest, Daphne Eviatar of Human Rights First, which has gathered

signatures from 26 retired military leaders urging the Senate to vote against the measure, as well as against a separate provision that would repeal the executive order banning torture.

“In this case, we’ve seen the administration very eagerly hold people without trial for 10-plus years in military detention, so there’s no reason to believe they would not continue to do that

here. So we’re talking about indefinite military detention of U.S. citizens, of lawful U.S. residents, as well as of people abroad.” [Includes rush transcript]
