chopping trunks columbian style????

hi all!
i was wondering if this has been tried in any indoor grows????

i read that the columbian growers would cut the plants trunk partially notching at the base to let them die while still growing @ the end of their life cycle which let them dry while standing and it also gave them that washed out yellow look?\a form of harvest drying ???

i wanted to see if anyone has tried this on a clone or 2 and what results if any???

I havent tried this but i dont imagine itd work too well as this would only cut off water from that one particular side of the trunk and water would still be able to go through the other side but it is an interesting theory

Yeah, it doesn't seem like this would work. I've broken the main stem on my plants, both intentionally and by accident, and it didn't kill them, just made them stronger :D

You could give it a try though. I mean, you're at harvest, so who cares if the plant dies, right? Only concern I could see is if it didn't work, and the plants got over-ripe. Well, that and most plants I've seen tend to get so bud heavy that they need strings to keep them standing upright. Seems whacking the stalk may result in 'TIMBER', know what I mean?

Welcome to IC you guys!

i think this is similar to cracking the stem also.. which causes plant trauma which may or may not make it for potent.

i happened to stumble over this article this morning...

There is really no confirmed method of forcing increased THC production. Many techniques have developed through misinterpretations of ancient tradition. In Colombia, farmers girdle the stalk of the main stem, which cuts off the flow of water and nutrients between the roots and the shoots. This technique may not raise the final THC level, but it does cause rapid maturation and yellow gold coloration in the floral cluster (Partridge 1973). Impaling with nails, pine splinters, balls of opium, and stones are clandestine folk methods of promoting flowering, taste and THC production. However none of these have any valid documentation from the original culture or scientific basis. Symbiotic relationships between herbs in companion plantings are known to influence the production of essential oils. Experiments might be carried out with different herbs, such as stinging nettles, as companion plants for Cannabis, in an effort to stimulate resin production. In the future, agricultural techniques may be discovered which specifically promote THC biosynthesis.

ive wondered but didnt want to try on a whim???
maybe thats why the columbian weed seemed more stoney because the thc probably degraded and turned to the sleep inducing ones creating a heavier feeling buzz?

i heard they do this near the end of the plants life .... when we would normally flush in modern growing,,,, they girdle or chop the base of the plant but leaving it die in the light ??? still standing but unable to feed... kind of like "force" ripening???
ive read thc is at its most potent in the plant at the "dawn" type hours just before the sun rises... and if its chopped i suspect it is still alive in the dark while drying the way we do it??? much like fruit....it might be still ripening off the vine,,,,,, i just figured somebody would have tested the theory on a clone or 2???
i also wonder if this will hurry the maturity and harvest time for indoor sativas??? maybe if they are grown out like that over a few generations they would adapt to their new way of life and reprogram their flowering rates????
i wonder if the plant would sense the season is getting shorter and flower and mature earlier????
OK.... ILL SHUT UP AND SMOKE MORE WHILE WE THINK ; )
ALL THEORY ???? WHO KNOWS??? ITS ALL FUN!!!

stalk cracking works. in theory you just have to squeeze it and until it cracks. tie it and after it heals it will get better. doing this will result in a stronger stalk and after getting thicker and stronger, the nutrient and water uptake seams to get better and better, resulting in a stronger and bigger plant.

it works outdoors to. i accidentally killed my plant by accident. the stalk was broken in half, almost all the way. so i used another plant to tie it. a week later the plant was still there and alive. the place where it used to be broken was thicker and it was healed.

Hello,

read up about xylem and phloem! The columbians cut open the phloem at the stem base. Therefore the roots are not supplied with sugar anymore and so starve to death within a week. (It may take a month with late fall crops in temperate climates). When roots are dead, the plant cannot get any water and nutritients (which were supplied through the xylem) so it wilts.

I've tried both girdling (removing the bark layer as described above), and 'crucifixion', where two cuts are made right through the stem at 90 degrees to each other with a knife at the base. Then small wooden splints are pushed right through, making a cross from above. This was reputed to shock the plant into producing more THC - whether it did or not I dunno, but it was pretty good weed for fluorescents - this was over 15 years ago.

To anyone panicking though, neither kill the plant, though it's best to do it at the last week or so. Girdling really does turn the plant gold - it cuts the clorophyll production immediately, and so the plant starts the curing process before it's even cut - giving a week head start on smoking! You only remove the layer down to the white pith, in a band about a cm deep. If you've got plenty of plants, just try it on one - it won't kill it..:)

wow the three post before this were very informative. I am interested in this technique, mainly for the idea of "curing" early and getting rid of the chloryphel (sp?), I like to cook and make tincture, so I like the idea of less Chlor. in my final product. thanks guys, I am going to have to play around with this next summer. peace_highst

I MIGHT TRY IT ON A SUPERSKUNK,,,
I GOT a few as spacefillers :chin:
post pics when you do and give us a before and after comparison of the ones you cut vs. the ones not cut. Take notes and lots of pics. Be our guniea pig, lol. Good luck and hope you get good results. peace_highst

i wonder if anyone has a suggestion about the actual method???
tie string tightly around base?
notch or cut the bottom ?
peel the outter layer off the buttom??
criss crossed spike??

im thinkin about reading up on the method a little...
i dont have the numbers to do multiple ways///
also im not sure yet if this is good for potency...
so i will do 1 ,,, most likely?
i planted a few to offset the extreme low germination of the roadkill style skunk i have ... i heard the current dissapointments of skunk #1 and pulled out some real old shit ... real cali skunk bud ... shit is way smelly tho!!!!
it is easy to gro but a real security risk for those without medical exemption,,, thats the reason that it is no longer grown because in the 90's people were super uptight about smell and went for the nl crosses .
i dont really know if sams skunk is not for real as i havent grown the 20 pack yet that i got from gypsy when he first starterd giving them as freebies ....

anyway,,,i germed 50 seeds and only 2 popped 1 perfect female that is way fat and showed trichs faster than the superskunk but now the superskunk has surpassed it in the resin dept ,,,, it has slightly more sativa in it tho!

i also got 1 perfect male !!! perfect stature and stinks in a bad way but i love the smell!!! almost overpowers your senses!!!

i remember growin this shit in the early to mid nineties and 1 bud in a zipoc can be smelled from accross the room,,,, seriously!!! i will be seeding it next few days! i will cross it to a few choice superskunks as well as a plant i named "obvious".... she got her name because you cant go out in public after smokin it!
red eyes , extreme belly hurting laughter / munchies / walkin stupid and stumbling!
i cant hide the fact that im fucked up! its OBVIOUS I TRIED GERMING 50 SEEDS OF THIS AND ONLY 3 POPPED BUT 2 DIDNT SURVIVE ,,, THE LAST ONE WAS FEMALE ,,,,VERY SATIVA,,,, MAYBE 5% INDICA IF ANY????

THAT WILL BE CROSSED WITH MY BUSH SKUNK,,,,,,"BUSH SKUNK" OR CALI SKUNK WAS THE 2 NAMES THE ROADKILL SKUNK WAS CALLED BY MY FRIEND WHO GAVE ME THE BUDS (SEEDED) YEARS AGO! VERY YELLOW :yummy: GOLDEN BUDS OF MEDIUM HARD DENSITY! :yummy:

wild stuff here!!!!
done in many countries with various plants for both food and medicinal plants .
it will induce flowering and mature those neverending sativas!!!
might be on to a new "old" technique!
some wrap a collar of tin foil araound the base and pour hot wax into the foil ,,, some use metal bands ,,,, i will try this with a reusable stainless hose clamp! the kind auto stores sell,,, :chin:

THERe WERE MORE CASES WITH steel bands than any other method...
i might do one with the above method and another with a hose clamp which would stop the nutes from rising up in the plant. this is very interesting to me and it might be the missing link to indoor sativa growing????
