Chinese Scientists Control Pigeon via Remote Control

HOLLLLLYY SHIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :fsu: :joint:
Chinese researchers became the first to control pigeons via remote control

Scientists from the Robot Engineering Technology Research Center at Shandong University of Science and Technology successfully used micro electrodes implanted in a pigeon's brain to make it fly left, right, up or down. The scientists used implants to stimulate different sections of the pigeon brain according to signals that scientists sent via a computer, which forced the pigeon to comply with the operator’s instructions.

Su Xuecheng, chief scientist on the project, said that his trials are the first experiment conducted like this in the world -- the scientists previously tried something similar with lab mice two years ago. Improvements in device design and technology is one of the leading reasons this trial worked.

The Chinese team did not specify exactly how the remote-control pigeon would be utilized in real-world applications. Su has successfully carried out the same experiments on mice since 2005.

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is also working on trying to control animals. Earlier this year, DARPA announced a project to actively manipulate a shark's brain signal, allowing scientists to accurately control the shark's movements. This technology would be used to help these 'stealth sharks' patrol the open seas.

that's not really amazing, this had been done in other animals also, I think mice etc.

basicly electric current, stimulates certain spots of the brain. There was a cat I think that they could press a button and it would start attacking and when the agression part of the brain was stimulated.

real world applications? I don't think this research is for real world applications of remote controlled animals but probably to understand behaviour and how the brain works.

That is not so great. Cheney has had his hand up Bush's ass for years making Bush's mouth work. Problem is that he is not really good at it.

Our biosphere is threatened, maniacs are building nukes and the Corpo-Nazis are sucking the whole planet dry...but we need remote controlled aerial rats.....

Stupid fuckin' assfart pigblowing donkeyhonkers......

I can't believe you guys don't see the long-term implications of this. If they can do it to pigeons now, then it's just a matter of time before they can do it to humans. Your first thought might be that even if they could do it, they wouldn't because people would object. But then some southern congressman introduces a law to control prisoners this way, so that the guards can be completely safe. And why stop there if you can control the movements of these people after they are released into society. Maybe the hardcore muslims will get ahold of this technology and use it to better control their women. Maybe all these lazy parents will decide that junior is out of control, we better put some microchips in his brain so we can keep him out of trouble. Remember, any time they develop new technology on pigeons and mice, it's probably headed for humans eventually, whether it's a good idea or not.

righton dr. kratz the only thin is that i can see this being used more like a weapon before they use it on humans. Think of an infected pigeon flying in, shitting everywhere then dying and spreading to the people wildlife etc... But dont worry by that point your government will have RFID chips in you and nanobots to tell them the second you get sick.. and remeber its all "to protect you" not control you....not at all

anyways i'm concerned of a possible bio weapon...even bombs....and what would the pigeon be thinking while he's flying left and trying to go right????

EDIT: WOW it gets my points across.....not completely coherent...o well

Dr.Katz, they have already done similar things with humans. No, everything is not meant for evil purposes. Just like a gun in itself is not evil, technology such as this is not a bad thing either.

In humans I believe this kind of technology can be used for people with nerve damage etc who are paralyzed, using electric stimulation and a computer to send signals from the brain to the computer / to the muscles, paralyzed people can regain use of their arms/ legs etc.

I don't think the pigeon will think anything, the pigeon would not know that it is being controlled, the brain is just getting a message to go left etc and pigeons are not smart enought to think, " why did I just turn left?"

Intriguing, an army of pigeons delivering my bud to me whenever i want a toke. I'll take two of those.

dogboy, you could achieve that with trained doves as it is :D

that stuff is pretty crazy btw... imagine if we all were like those pigeons but at a deeper level, like we obey the commands of kids in another dimension who are playing their own version of video games with us hehehehe...

PazVerde, I always thought about that when I was a kid!! Man, I'm glad someone else brought that up, because it was always on my mind when I was in elementary school and such.

There is already a system i saw on the TV where you use virtual headsets to play pacman. They used a college campus as the levels and the eye piece overlays the 'pips' and powerpills etc. I'm sure someone could dig out the video with some searching.

i remember years and years back they had done the samething with a cockroach, they could control it like a remot control car it was pretty freaky. u guys remember that scene in the 5th element with the remote control roach.... same thing.
