I agree they would be better than hid. I have done allot with cfl's but even I don't see the point to these huge cfl's. I would rather do my growing with ones available from the store. I would hate blowing many of those.

when it comes to lumen pr watt HID is always superior to the cfl with 2x-3x
but cfl had advantages regarding less heat and no need for a ballast

If you're going to use CFL wattage over 27 watts or so (with present production lamps) you're better off using the remote ballast lamps.

Here's a thread with some info on them.

The 55w Pl-L lamps are 21" long (including the socket) and less than 3" wide and about an inch and a quarter thick.

Basically a T5HO lamp in a single loop out and back (No wasted light on coils).

That looks like an excellent vegging/clone lamp you have there!

I must point out that this is only partly true, and often not true at all. I mean no disrespect, but CFLs typically only put out between 60-75 lumens per watt, and thus are enormously less efficient than HPS, and even MH, but also those two lighting sources have a vastly better PAR rating than CFLs tend to. I'm a big fan of fluorescents for a lot of reasons, but pretending they're more efficient than HID is counter productive. Only high efficiency T8 and T5 lamps approach HPS in terms of pure efficiency.

Where you are right though is when you're comparing CFLs with an electronic ballast(which they all have), and an HID with a magnetic ballast. If you were to make the comparison to an HID also running an e-ballast, then basically the HPS devastates the CFL in the efficiency contest.

Also, I agree very much with the poster who mentioned the cost of these burning out. With that much invested in each lamp, the cost of replacing it is steep. If you're a frugal shopper you can buy a bulk package of good CFLs that are more regular size and place them all around the plant for a much more even canopy of light.

Perhaps the only use I could agree with on this thing would be open-bulb vertical growing in a limited space.

I have those bulbs (Have them for 5 years now) and use them for seed sprouting and until 2 weeks. They are 85 watts and work pretty damn good. What i do is take a piece of wire and tie it to the end of the last ring of the cfl, and then connect the other side back to the socket and wire that I hang. This way it hangs horizontal over the seedlings. With 2 I can get around 10 12 oz cups under them. I still find that using cfls for the first 2weeks is awesome at 24/0. And yes I have a 250, 270, 400, 600 and 1000 watt ballasts and lights. CFLs, IMHO are perfect for the seedling stage. But, if I knew about T5's then I would have bought one of those fixtures.

i just saw this same exact bulb in Home Depot on Sunday. Fits in a regular socket, thinking about grabbing one myself for vegging in addition to the four 23w CFLs.

im pretty sure home depot does not stock them

they do stock the 85w lights of america but it doesnt include the ballast and that is a U-tube configuration and this is a spiral

The biggest spiral CFL I have seen is a 65 watt (300 eq.) Local Lowes. Only available in the 2700k spectrum, though. I prefer the daylight (6500k) spectrum for my vegging cfls.

Yes, those have been available at Lowe's for about 2 years now. They do unfortunately only keep them on the stands for the 2700 spectrum. Though if you explore Lowe's website you can get lucky and find some that are 4500 or greater. I started a current grow using 4 26 watt cfls 6500 spec. I have switched into blooming and am using 4 of the 65 watters. I'll be sure to post pics soon.
Everything seem great right now. Plants are 6 inches tall, minimal stretching due to keeping the light height right for 32 seedlings. But I plan to run these seeds for another 8 weeks. The good thing about these lights is that even with 4 of the 65wts running for 12 hours straight I only need a tinnnnny little fan to keep them cool in a 2ft x 3ft closet!!!

Don't knock these cfls until you try them. If you don't have much space, and want to keep fan noise to a minimum these would be my choice to go with!
