Cheapest most effective odor control method?

EDIT: I have a theory on the best home made odor control system possible, check bottom of forum. I did research and careful thinking to come up with this idea! I wont be testing it until things start to stink a bit, but if you want to try it, let us know!
Hello, I am thinkn about doing a closet grow but want to be safe and make sure I can afford a way of controlling odor. also it has to be cheap. I was thinking of using 3.5 inch corrugated drain pipe from home depot or lowes, its like a coiled snake type of drainage pipe. I've seen a setup where someone used this type of hose and ran it to a rubbermaid bin which had carbon filters and maybe volcanic rock for absorbing odor - what device can i use to create the suction needed? Any ideas on some McGuyver odor control methods, are appreciated.. I was thinking of taping about 5 CPU fans back to back in an intake direction and attaching them to the intake of the hose, Instead of wasting power resources on a PSU i'd use a 12 volt cell phone plug, and take off the thing that plugs into the cell phone exposing the wires, i'd then wire it to a molex female , molex are the chain wiring that you use inside a PC... Then i'd attach 5 cpu fans ... I dont know if the suction would be good enough.. any ideas? I dont want to shell $80 on a dayton blower... im also growin in my closet so the environment isnt airtight, so i need powerful suction to suck up the smells and draw them thru the scrubbing chamber..

I'm currently in the same situation as you are and I haven't fully decided on how to control odor. However, I do have one bit of interesting information for you: make sure the 12v cellphone wall wart (the black thing, lol) can supply enough amperage for your 5 cpu fans. Otherwise your fans will suffer and won't be operating at their maximum capacity. Most 12v 80mm fans take around .20 amps each, so you'll need to have a psu supply atleast 1 amp max (you should shoot for 1.5 amp just to be safe).

You may also look into ONA odor control gel/liquid. I've been tossing around an idea for a while regarding ONA liquid odor control. I envision having 2 reservoirs with the exhaust bubbling through the ONA liquid. This should create maximum contact with the ONA liquid and thus assure total odor control.

get some ONA gel, the stuff works wonders and is fairly cheap at only 20$ for 1L or 40$ for 4L

im in a closet myself its not the cheap route but it works well air tight too

first to make a closet airtight u gonna have to get some black plastic sheeting then get one of those adhesive zippers. place the sheeting around the door n seal it up then put the zipper in the middle creating another door. but this time its sealed. i can open my closet door n tell which way the air is moving, if the plastic is pushed in that means the air is suckin in and if its pushed out that means its trying to blow the air out

i have a 600cfm vortex expensive but its a very good fan. i have that in my attic with a DIY carbon filter on the exhaust end. in the closet i keep air feshners in there to it smells fresh so smells dont leak out when i open the zip

i know u said cheap but maybe u can get some ideas from my setup at least

NEW! Air Reactor MX-120

This compact carbon filter is sized right (and priced right) for smaller garden areas such as closets or self-contained grow chambers. The Air Reactor MX-120, imported from Canada, uses a 105 CFM axial fan to circulate air constantly through a bed of activated carbon. Carbon naturally and safely eliminates odors and other organic molecules such as bacteria or mold spores. Simply change the carbon every 2-3 months.

* Air Reactor MX-120, $99.99
* Air Reactor Carbon Refill, $3.99

i think im gonna just do my cpu fan method, im lookin for a 2 amp 12 volt ac adapter right now ill wire it to molex and back to b ack maybe 6 small square fans attached to the 3 inch hose, bound by duct tape.. that way they suck into the hose.. do the odors have to bubble thru the ONL liquid if i decide to go this route? i need a pretty powerful suction to do that...

Has anyone heard of zeolite?? its like a volcanic rock odor absorber, much cheaper.. what about dumping a ton of it in a rubber maid bin, running an intake and outtake to it, and having all ur odors go thru layers of it? then the cpu fan method would work good!

http://www.environmentalhomecenter.com/shop.mv?CatCode=PRODUCT&ProdCode=ZEOLITE

2 pounds of the stuff, get a small rubber maid bin... and your drainage hose... cut holes in the rubbermaid bin for intake / out-take and bind it with tape so it's airtight... then all your suckage goes thru the odor absorbing volcanic mineral.. and exits clean.. I think i just discovered MYSELF the most cheapest effective odor control method there is... I will test this and post my findings! we have a small pouch of it in the garage, it doesnt seem like it's absorbing odor anymore but its over 1 month old, 2 pounds of this stuff should absorb odor for your whole harvest! this pouch that lasted 1 month was like...... 1 pound or less

you can strip the power supply end of this adapter:

http://www.powerstream.com/ac-1245.htm

I consulted an electronics expert on IRC and asked him if it possible to strip the powering end of this adapter, and wire it to a PC molex.. he says it can indeed power 8 fans well.

so you have 4 fans back to back taped together or bound together for intake, and 4 fans for outake, sucking odors thru the volcanic rock in the chamber, might not even need the drainage hose. What do you guys think? I think you'd need to replace the volcanic rock every harvest, however! as it loses it's absorbing properties... We've had the 1lb pouch in our garage for a little while now, and it doesnt seem to be absorbing odors, it smells like the odors it absorbed. Each harvest you will spend:
2 lb. mesh pouch $6.75 + S/H

To restore your devices odor absorbing capabilities. Simply dump the old crap out of the rubbermaid bin, presumably not in your trash can where the odors can be detected, but bury it somewhere. Then restore it with fresh volcanic rock

also what about just taking a small powerful swivel fan and just taping many pieces of carbon filter to it's cage, all over it. so all odors go right thru the paper, will that work?

do the odors have to bubble thru the ONL liquid if i decide to go this route? i need a pretty powerful suction to do that...

The ONA bubbling technique is just something I thought of for small PC box grows. All of the exhaust would need to bubble through the liquid, and it shouldn't be too tough to push the air through a tube into the ONA liquid concoction.

Although, your best bet is to stick with some tried and true method like a carbon scrubber with a small block of ONA in the grow area.

I DID IT! i just came up with plans for the best home made odor control device. I am real busy right now but stay tuned for the diagram, details, and instructions.

Vaportronic Wall Cabinet System from hidhut.com; vaporteks have been very reliable and the guy over there is a nice fellow and has helped me out with great customer service also.

im usign my closet so... no need for a hut.. just making a scrubber out of a rubbermaid bin with 8 fans intaking / outtaking, the fans suck in odors thru 1 carbon filter, then thru volcanic rock, then thru another carbon filter... powered by the ac adapter printed above... ill have a ghetto mspaint diagram rigged here for you guys to see!

i would go with the ordorlok.com there cheap too! the ona will give u a headache seeing how it is not air tight and indica's will over power the ona from what i've done in the past. so trust me go with the ordorlok as i stated it is cheap 50 clams from what i seen. enjoy the bountiful harvest, bravo

to use the odor lok odor sock do you have to have a airtight space? or will it still work effectively? how does it operate? AC? does it have a fan in it or something?? or does it attach to ducting?

do i have to buy a seperate fan or is it all in one odor removal solution? How long does it last? reusable?

i went to their site, im assuming the fan is included, i dont see anything saying it isnt or that it's sold seperately, anyone? if not where do i get it, how much?
