Cheap-o ebay tent off-gassing.

I had been reading around prior to purchasing and came to the conclusion that the new silver Mylar tents were good to go. Things started slowing down a week after my tent came in, and now my plants are showing typical off gassing phantom symptoms. Heads up.

what is this tent off gassing I keep hearing about?
like chemical offgassing from the tent materials?

Precisely. There are stickies on the subject in the sick plant forum, I believe. I'm no expert on the subject, but basically your plants stop growing, yellow out, and eventually die due to different plastics "off-gassing" toxic particles into the air.

I figure I should add
all you guys buying cheapo ebay grow tents should have a look at the big online sporting good retailers right now. Some still have 4 man Ice fishing huts on clearance.
extremely easy to adapt into a grow tent without cutting/ modifying anything.

check out my back in the saddle or my O degree C grown n show diary., easy peasy quick n easy and the damn thin cost me under 150 after tax. It's 6x6x 7ft high, I lined it with black white and hung a 1000 watter in there. it's rockin right along..... and no offgassing ;)

Dare I ask if anyone thinks high temps and/or fresh air could salvage the tent? I messaged the seller and got this in reply..

Dear Cusotmer,
Thanks for your contacting us.
Really sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
For the issue, there usually be some odour for the new item, could you kindly put the item into air to let the odour become not heavy.
For which, we issue you $9 as compensation, and you just keep it for usage?
Is that ok for you?
Have a nice day!
Sian

Of course I'm not actually planning on tryin to salvage a $40 p.o.s. but I can't say I'm not curious about if and how off-gassing materials could be "aired-out".

Like the new car smell.... eventually it fades.

So, just for the sake of argument, someone could take an old toxic hydro hut, expose it to heat and fresh air, and perhaps some uv exposure(?), and eventually the hut becomes non toxic?

Pretty much. The volatile hydrocarbons in the plastic will evaporate & dissipate.

Well, unless the plastic is actually breaking down which seems unlikely.

Exactly!!! Guess I should've spoke more scientific in the first place..... think of it as a new car or new anything.... the cheap material off gasses..... heat and mass airflow help the process. I would seriously try that before bagging your operation! ! Set it outside in the sUn for a few days.... just needs to heat up and breath you'll be good to go. Cheers hope it all works out for you

I would ask for a spec sheet on what materials and adhesives were used in the manufacture, and then go look those up.
I have an extensive background in working with composite materials, epoxies, esters and polyesters. There is some seriously bad stuff out there and if it's offgassing, you are breathing that in your environment.
the manufacturer should be curing their product in an environment that consumes all offgassing and ensures a full cure. Some of these types of products , if left uncured, will not just cure on their own and will release chemicals their entire lifespan, when exposed to elevated temps and especially direct light.

I'd recommend doing what lifespan did above. get those materials cured in some hot sunshine out doors ;)

I don't really have the option of setting it up to air out outside, so I've had my dryer exhausting hot air into the tent all day with the windows open in the laundry room, checking every half hour or so to make sure I don't burn my house down somehow. I stopped a few hours ago to check for any odor and it was still there. Do you guys think uv exposure would speed up the "curing" or should a day or two of warm airflow do the trick?

Times the only thing that will help.... even after I heat treated and tried to cure mine kept a funk for a few weeks. Not as bad, in the beginning it would almost take your breath away.. I'm on a year of use and all it smells like is.... well... not chemicals lol. Good luck sure it will work out for ya!

dude it could be alot of things.. are u growing in soil? or hydro. or wat?

what ph.. what feed.. what temps.. i mean what were u growing it in before the tent? like you gave no info. and expect help..

if you keep telling yourself its offgassing.. no matter what problem it REALLY HAS you are going to chalk it up to your tent..

i have 5 tents off ebay.. the cheapo 4x8s and 5x5 and 4x2 .. and nothing offgasses anymore lol the chinese dudes all know now what to use.. and that stopped happening a while back..

second the only way this is happening is if u bought your tent from someone who had old stock or has access to old stock.. usually..

and to be honest.. usually offgassing.. your entire plant will look like shit. that looks like a deff or maybe even over nuting..

depends give us some real info and we migh tbe able to help u.

but also.. all my tents smelled funky when u open them up.. its material lol it stinks for like a few days .. and that was it.. now they dont smell like anything at all..

and as far as i can tell on ebay. 99% of the people selling the offgassing tents.. have such a bad review on tents.. that if u didnt research that shit.. THATS ON U lol research the seller on all ebay items before purchasing.
