hows it goin peoples, im here today to share with you how i made a cheap ass ghetto veg box. this isnt going to be pretty, or fancy with a bunch of bells and whistles, this is a bare bones yet efficient box to veg, clone, and even flower in if youre short on space/cash. utilitarian if you will. well, on with the show-
Materials-
50gal "steel" rubbermaid container- $15 at home depot
panda film- ~$15 for a large section from ebay or any number of hydro shops and online.
Mylar- same price and availability as panda film more or less
duct tape- duh.
a cuttie-thingy of some sort.
this is all you need for the box if you have CFL's or fluoros lying around like i do, but if not while youre at home depot get:
2- 4' fluorescent shoplight fixtures- bout 7 bucks a pop
4-cool white fluorescents, or a mix of cool white and daylight. this is for veg, if you intend to flower with fluoros switch out for warm white or soft white tubes. - $2-5 a piece
extension cord- ~$5
3-PRONG timer- $6
so basically you can be totally set up for about 60 bucks if you shop right. not bad, eh?
first we measure the sides of the container, giving extra room for slack. youre gonna want 3 pieces of panda film for the outside to light-proof it
1- 50" X 60"
2- 20" x 30"
take the rubbermaid and set in in the middle of the big piece of panda film, so each side will come up and over the lip of the rubbermaid a bit, and secure them on the inside of the lip with the tape. tape down the film on the ends as you see in the picture for for simplicity's and "neatness's" sake.
now you should have all but 2 sides (the ends) covered with panda film. you take each of your smaller pieces of panda film and tape them over the edges of the big piece, on the underside of the rubbermaid, and on the inside of the lip, as shown. common sense here, if you see a hole or light leak, tape it up.
by now you should have a lightproofed (the lid is light proof) rubbermaid, half the battle is won! basically we apply the same technique to the inside of the rubbermaid using mylar, now mylar can be a pain to work with, but its not too bad. make your mylar about the same size as the panda film cuts, and use bits of tape to secure the seams of the smaller strips to the big one. if you dont give yourself enough slack the mylar will be like a trash bag thats too small for its container and your pots might not sit right.
now that we have the inside lined with mylar, all you gotta do is slap some plants in there and some lights on top!
ventilation- fluoros dont get very hot at all, so minimal venting is needed. like a cieling fan in the same room is fine, or a small desk fan mounted nearby, just blowing down into the box.
use books/boxes or whatever to keep your plants within a couple inches of the lights, since that is their effective range.
i guess thats about it, everyone feel free to post your questions and comments. i hope this helps!
