From Words of Wisdom, by President Ikeda, on "Difficulties." www.ikedaquotes.org.

The world of Hell is a state in which life is itself painful; where anything you see makes you feel miserable. Such people need someone--anyone--to be at their side. They need someone who will be there for them, to listen and offer even just a few words of encouragement. That's all it may take for the flame of life to burn brightly once again in the heart of someone who is suffering deeply. Just knowing that someone cares about them makes their heart expand.

There is an ancient book of Chinese learning known as the Huainanzi (Huai-nan Tzu), from which Nichiren Daishonin also cites in his writings. Today, I'd like to present you with this quote from it: "The shrewd are good at weighing the future. The wise are good at preparing for the future." In other words, when one achieves a victory, that is the time to buckle down and prepare oneself for future challenges.

"Major natural disasters are occurring all over the world. The global economic crisis continues and people are filled with uncertainty. More and more people are seeking a solid spiritual and philosophical mainstay. 'Establishing the correct teaching' means setting forth what is right, raising the banner of truth and justice. It means making genuine respect for the sanctity of life our foundation. 'Establishing the correct teaching' essentially comes down to young people like all of you, who embrace a truly humanistic philosophy and sound principles, standing up courageously and taking action in society."

SGI Newsletter No. 8032, SGI President Ikeda's Youth Study Sessions: YOUTH AND THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN - The Banner of "Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land"—Part 1 [of 2], translated July 7th, 2010

The course of our lives is determined by how we react—what we decide and what we do—at the darkest of times. The nature of that response determines a person's true worth and greatness.

PB and Babba, Thank you so much!!! :)

Weird- Big Hug to you and yours on this special day!

Today was an utter victory and we had some great encouragement posted today to guide the way! Thanks Babba, Socal, PTD and especially PB. Those concise and heavy impact interpretative words are really adding a nice dimension to the Goshos. I have been cautiously following your words and couldn't really jump in on the heavy doctrinal stuff a couple weeks ago because I was finishing school and couldn't research the various contextual references enough to talk with sense, but I'm right here everyday.

Weird, I've written dozens of super long posts that I lost when my connection logged off over the last couple years. Sometimes it is devastating because you just want another heart to "know" what you "KNOW AND FEEL" within those crucial moments. I've posted to about losing these posts - painfully sometimes... Your words were those of an enlightened bodhisattva! I bow in obeisance to you and all the other Bodhisattvas on this thread.

In fact, I've been so fortunate to find out that Weird is yet another brother from another mother and so is PTD, so is Forest, so is Babba, so is Socal, so is BONZO, so is Scegy, so is Desi! Plus my sisters TrichyTrichomeness, DG, Mrs.Babba (linked directly to my heart), this family is amazing. Each of you have family too and they mean alot to me! Oh my, I remember when I met Bonzo on another site where I was talking about Buddhism and I told him to come and talk to Tom here because he had much more experience and that was similar to me and Bud trying to help me get the courage to actually show up to a "meeting" which was just a little informal gathering type thing to figure out whats up. The chanting growers are really a force to be reckoned with.

I chant for all of you and your family - you can take it to the bank!

:)

Let's keep focusing on kosen-rufu and spreading the hope within our family! I mean at home, or on the phone with distant loved ones.

IT IS UP TO US TO SPREAD THE LOVE AND LEAD THE WAY! I KNOW NOW IS THE TIME FOR US TO USE THIS GREAT MOMENTUM WE'VE CREATED! Let the snowball of love grow and spread the word - Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

From Words of Wisdom, by President Ikeda, on "Self Mastery". www.ikedaquotes.org.

A person of integrity seeks self-mastery; a person obsessed with power seeks to control others. A person of integrity takes action, works hard and struggles to overcome his or her inner weakness; a person driven by lust for power forces others to work for his own selfish purpose, never reflecting upon himself.

I pop in this thread every now and again, but I still find myself asking- What is with this chanting?

I see the occasional pearl of wisdom but feel as though much is lost (to an outside reader such as myself) amongst the various mantras and scriptures.

Just a thought.
