cfls or fluoros

Im just getting into this which would be better for veg? Cfls or Flouros? My veg space will be about 1' by 2' by 3' tall.

Any comments would be helpful.

Thanks

Hi dude, it sort of depends. Do you have any more ideas on how you want to do this and what you want to do exactly? (sog, scrog? etc) If you don't, then I would say CFLs simply because that's what I've used and its worked well and they're small so it's easy to arrange them in different ways to suit the space and grow style. I read they have more penetration too, since they're essentially the same amount of watts packed into a small point. But I don't want to rule out fluoros. I would like to give them a try.

i went from flouros to cfls, so i say cfls rock for veg, just get them close as possible and even your sativas will look like indicas,LOL , mine did

I prefer the flouro tubes because I am able to keep a more even canopy and have similar light the entire length of the veg area.

CFLs are a type of fluorescent lamp by the way. Tubes are more efficient but I doubt you have enough room for a good set of them.

Well thanks alot guys good info. I already have four 20 watt 2' flouros in that part of the cab. Its a NGB type cab. They are just fixtures from the hardware store. They have 120v ballasts, and the bulbs are GE daylight. They have about 1050 lumen each, so I have about 4200 lumens. Is this enough light? The reason I ask is I'm doing a pratice run with some bagseed and the plants are growing slow.

Could I run T5 2' bulbs with my 120v ballast. If I did this I belive I would have 8000 lumens.

Keep the infomation coming my way thank you everyone

yes, you have enough light for mothering, seedlings, cuttings and vegging. cfl versus tube is really just personal preference, i think. if i were to build a new veg. cab. i think i would go with 2' tubes, because the leaves can actually touch them without getting burned. i think that they produce a similar amount of heat as a cfl of the same wattage, but because the tube has such a massive area to disperse heat, they feel warm to the touch, not hot.

p.s. ... more light WILL equal faster growth (all other things being equal), if that is what you are after.

I felt the same way, until I found FLAT CFLs :)

55w PL-L lamps are the most efficient to date. Once you go above 55w you run into more heat per watt and that's not efficient.

The 55w lamps are also about 22-23 inches long, that's with the socket.

:)

Wicked WICKED lamps! Just wish they'd had these 5 years ago. :)

thanks green grow. I would still like to know if I could put in T5 bulbs they have a higher wattage I belive. I know very little about electricty.

Anyone?? Thanks

P.S. Hydro soil I like those flat cfls what is the lumen output on one of those? What does your fixture look like where would I get one??

When you get one of the 55w PL-L lamps, make damn sure you get the right one though. Some only put out 66 lumens per watt, but some put out as high as 90, maybe higher. Definitely pay attention to what you're getting!

Here's a link to one of the better examples(I don't know if they sell fixtures for these or not though): http://www.1000bulbs.com/32670/

The 3000K 55w is 4,800 lumens and the 5600K 55w is 4,100 lumens from 1000bulbs.com.

They sell the sockets for these but they suck. You also have to call them and ask for their TG11 sockets as they don't have them listed on their website.

They're $1.97 each or something like that.

I have my lamps secured with micro zip-ties and wire to hold the other end up and keep the lamp level. LOL

When I first started out I bought several of those 2 ft. 20W tube fixtures & attached them together. They worked OK for veg. Then I discovered the spiral CFL's. I've now got 4 bathroom vanity fixtures bolted together that I can put 12 cfl's of varying color temps into. My experience is that I now get relative explosive growth in veg with this sort of set-up. I am so very very happy with this that i don't think I would ever go to the expense & trouble of putting up a MH in my cab. The 20W tubes grow the plants much more slowly and seem to be best suited for things like getting yur clones going.

They PL-L lights I'm using are listed as T5HO Linear Lamps.
The 55w 3000K lamps put out 4,800 lumens.
My fixture is actually just sockets screwed to the underside of a shelf at the moment.

See this thread here: Remote CFL Ballasts.... Who has the skinny on these?

I've pretty much put all the information to date in this thread. :)

http://www.specialty-lights.com/new-wave-t5.html

they make a 24 inch version of these and they will blow any amount of cf;'s out of the water. i was using cfls for a long time but veg was much slower untill i switched to these. worth the $$

Yeah, pretty much the same thing as the PL-L lights I use. 55w T5HO lamps.
It's like a long T5HO tube bent in half.

Only there's only one socket needed for connection and they're only 22" max

Flouros put out more lumen pr watt then cfl but cfl is more compact

You're quite correct on the compactness..... My lamps are 55w, 21" T5HO CFL and they're at 4,800 lumens.

Just out of curiosity, I looked up the output of a 24" T5HO and they're around 2,000 lumens at 24watts.

Hrmm.... just did the math and these PL-L's are more efficient than I thought. The 24" T5HO is putting out 83.3 lumens per watt and the 21" CFL is putting out 87.3.

In comparison the 54watt tube puts out 5,000 lumens making an efficient 92.6 lumens per watt.

But it's 4 feet long! Waaaaaaaaaaay too big for most stealth applications that I've run in the past.

Hrmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
