Casey Jones ~ First Grow

G

Guest

For my first grow, I choose Casey Jones. I managed to snag a package of seeds off of Seedbay a few weeks ago. I germinated them using the paper towel method. 13/13 sprouted. I also germinated OH x Chronic (Freebie) alongside but only managed a 1/5 germ rate. All 14 seeds were planted in a mixture of Miracle Grow Organic Choice, Perlite, and Lime. I am using 6 26 Watt CFL's(6500k) for vegging. They will then go into another area under an 8 Bulb T5 system for flowering(space issues restrict me from using an HPS at the current time).

I did not intend to create a journal originally, so the first few days of sprouting are absent. One thing of importance is the infestation of nats I am dealing with at the moment. These were brought in through the Miracle Grow Organic Choice. I have started using Mosquito dunks soaked in water that I give to the plants. I also have broken up some of these dunks across the soil surface. This combined with fly tape should eliminate the problem in the coming days/weeks. Due to high heat I have been turning the lights on 18/6 during the night. Temps with lights are now under control and have went from 95F+ to maxing out at around 85F. I managed to do this using a passive intake and 2 120mm Computer fans rated @70CFM each. I also have a small fan blowing across the top of the plants. I held back on watering the plants yesterday in an attempt to dry out the soil and speed up the process of eliminating the nats. I will be using a different type of organic soil after the first transplant in an attempt to avoid this problem in the future. Out of the 14 sproutlings, 3 are barely growing, with 2 of these having just stopped growing besides a little stem protruding from the surface. I will give them a few more days before removing. My other concern at the moment is the purple stems my sproutlings have. Could this be overwatering? I am using tap water with a PH of around 6.8, but as this is my first grow, I have not attained a "feel" for watering my plants yet. The plants seem to be limp from my lack of watering, but I did begin watering them prior to taking these pictures. On to the photos.

We will call this day 5:

Any comments? I am obviously in this to learn as MUCH as I can in an effort to further my skill. Please keep in mind that the plants closer to the bottom of the pictures DO have 2 CFL's directly over them at a 90 degree angel, I just removed it so I could get closer to the plants. The wires on the floor seem to be of no consequence at the moment, as I usually put all the cups in a plastic container. I am barely getting any run off at the moment despite having 3 holes on the bottom and sides of each cup. Am I overwatering? Underwatering? What else am I doing wrong that can be corrected(besides using MG soil =p). Thanks.

The seedlings look good! Your keeping the CFL's close to the tops of the plants right? Watch the lower leaves for signs of yellowing which will tell you to start feeding nutrients. I usually start in with weak nutrients at about 8-10 days in - and add a drop of superthrive which stimulates root growth..

Good luck with yr grow!

Yes, all 6 CFL bulbs are positioned on a 90 degree angle, hovering over the tops of the plants. They were around 1 inch away but I moved them to about 2 inches on average when the leaves started to droop(VERY LITTLE). There is little heat build up below the bulbs because of the circulation so I will lower them now that I watered today. One thing to keep in mind is that there are 14 plants(11 that are actually successfully growing), and only 6 bulbs, so the distance between the bulb and some plants might be greater than the stated 1-3 inches. The room is pretty good with reflection though, it is around 3 feet long by 3 feet weight with a right angle ceiling that at its highest is around 3 feet tall, and its lowest around a foot. Purple stems = what? Good/bad/doesn't matter at this stage?

What could this be? 2-3 out of 12 of my plants have this droppey look to them when comared to the others. Overwatering? Underwatering? Water is tap with a 6.8ish pH. Temps are now around 75-80. Some nats remaining. The droppey ones are anywhere from 2-3 inches away from the CFL.

The thing is, the plants that are currently somewhat "limp" started this after I hadn't watered them for a day while I was mixing up something to kill the gnat offspring. Since then I've watered daily and they still remain this way.

Good Luck :D

Good Luck :D

Don't worry dude just keep the soil at a regular moisture level and move the lights closer they're tough little buggers and will pull through, let them stand up by themselves and they will be stronger for it when they do.
Sucks with the gnats man. but you got a good set up there.
But even the limp ones look good just a little purpling on the stems, what does that mean?! missing a little K?! They'll grow out of the deficiencies as their roots develop and they can pick out more goodies from the soil.
It looks great what you have going, can't wait to see what they look like. And your little guys are only a couple days older than mine :D we'll have to compare!

Good Luck

GET THEM OUT OF THE MG ORGANIC.

Now I had a white rhino grow log around here... impossible to find its like 1.5 years old. But even in my original thread you can see that MG has SLACKED on their recent products. The MG organic used to be pretty damn good, grew my rhino very nice, now it has a reddish color and lots of bark. It killed my casey jones seedling along with a few others a bit ago, looked EXACTLY like that, it will stunt growth, VERY poor soil... they are just trying to save $ by changing the formula, this was very recent, but please believe me when I tell you, transplant those babies in something else! MG organic sucks now, where as it used to be decently good....if you don't change it they will not grow trust me...

You were 100% correct Kinderfield. A few days after starting this log all the plants began to slump very badly, then proceeded to turn yellow from the bottom up. I tried a few different things in an attempt to fix the problem, but that is difficult if you are growing in pure hell(MG). 4 days ago I sucked it up, and traveled to a hyrdo shop and purchased the ingredients for the moonshine mix. I gave them a nice watering after transplant, and 3 days later the plants had tripled in size. This is astonishing to me as the plants were severely underdeveloped in the miracle grow soil. They had been growing for over 2 1/2-3 weeks and looked as if they were only a few days old. I will get updated pictures of the now much bigger, recovering Casey Jones tommorrow. Until then, this is a picture of a plant that was nearly completely yellow 3 days ago. Since it was taken yesterday, the plant has probably grown another 1/3 of its size. These brown spots remain though and they are only on this plant. Is this damage left over from the miracle grow soil?

Here is an update. They look a bit limp post-watering, but the difference from 5 days ago when they were still tiny sproutlings seemingly stunted for 2 weeks is pretty amazing. The yellow leaves are a result of the couple weeks they were in the Miracle Grow Organic Choice soil. I am questioning if I should just remove these yellow leaves and let the explosive new growth continue.

Glad you took my advice watt... and it is also good you learned from my mistakes because unfortunately I lost 2 of my last female CJ beans in some pathetic MG soil. bah...I am just glad for you it did not turn out the same. The dots could be from a high PH, in a soiless mix.

Should be fine though as long as if they aren't progressing, or a lack in cal/mag which I don't think it is.
