Carbon Scrubber plans ok?

Alright, here I go. I'm going to build a 8x6x6 inch box with the top being able to open. On one end I will have a computer fan pushing the cab air into the scrubber. Then, inside, I will have several (3) veritcal "slots" that hold frames covered in screen 1 inch thick 8 inches wide 6 inches high that are filled with activated carbon from my local pet store, places with an inch of space or o inbetween each filter. I got the "super activated" stuff, I dunno if theres any difference. On the backside, I will have a fan pulling the air from the scrubber out into a section of 2'' piping, with a S trap to get rid of any light they may be left, running up the inside of the cab to a small box built around the 120mm exhaut fan. It will all be air tight, and it is in a small, stealth(dresser) cab. What do you think? It's just for flowering, currently 1 girl , later on up to 3 girls. All scrog. I'm running multiple passive intakes, 2 fans for circulation, and one computer fan also for intake. Do you think it'll work good?

It sounds good as long as your fans can manage the static pressure of 3" of AC, just be sure that the air can not bypass or sneak around the carbon held in the frames and you sould be golden.

What material are you using to build the box and frames? I been playing with the idea of building fan boxes and an inline scrubber around pvc frames and covering them with cloroplast to keep weight down. I'm also looking to add sound dampening foam or insulation of some type to the fan boxes for noise control.

1/2 inch laminated MDF for the box, and Im going to design my own little frames out of thin wood trim. It should work quite nicely. How many layers of the AC should I go with at what thickness? Maybe 3 at an inch thick each is no good? Here is a quick pic, you seen the aluminum mesh stapled to both sides of the filter contains the AC which you pour into the top of the frame. They can they be slid into and out of little slots on the Scrubber box.

How big of a cabinet are you trying to filter?

I built a SiS style filter and I can tell you that the more carbon the better the air is filtered = less smell for a longer period of time.

I fear it may be too small is my point.

Sorry I don't have an answer as to capacity of your design...

When sizing you need to consider the effective area of carbon you are exposing to the stinky air. Now you have 3x (6" x 8") for 144 sq inches of AC, so I would try and compare this to a small cannister type filter and see how it stacks up.

As I mentioned the one thing that could bite you other than size would be static pressure as you have 3 inline layers of AC were a convetional cannister is a single layer only. I can't recall ever seeing mention of any numbers for SP versus inches of AC but with removable frames, if you have too much SP you could always remove one to lessen resistance.

I hope one of the growers here will chime in on this, I'm curious if there is a formula for calculating SP per thickness of carbon in a scrubber design. I imagine that granuale size of the AC can also effect this to a degree as well.

Cheers

The cab is approx 3 feet high, 1 and a half feet thick, and 2 feet across. I'll build a shelf for it to sit on about 10 inchs down from the roof of the cab, then the piping from there up the the exhaust fan. Thanks for the good responses, If I'm having air flow problems I'll remove 1 of the filters. How much AC did any of you other guys with DIY scrubbers out there use in YOURS?

I use 16 pounds of AC (actually I use activated alumina impregnated with potassium permanganate).

It is about the size of a can100 filter. My cab is a dual chamber (30X20X36" and 16"x20"x24") I have 198 watss of cfls in the veg chmaber and 250w hps in the flower chamber. I have no smell issues at all.
