Carbon Filter Question

If one were to buy a used carbon filter from a hauling company for uber cheap is there any way one could clean and recycle the carbon within it? There is no way to know how well used/how old it is...

You can cook the carbon in a oven, it will smell though. I washed the carbon in hot water twice and that helped make it work better.

I would just buy a new one or make one.

I was thinking of buying new carbon for it which would still be cheaper than buying only a new one. Do you have any links to cooking carbon? What/how bad does it smell like? Do you wash it in hot water then cook or vice versa?
Thanks

Dude, you just got that new house a filter is the last thing you want to be cheap about. I just wrapped up a grow at a condo...no fucking way would I go cheap. I just spent over 500 bucks on filters for my new house and my whole neighborhood is full of hippies...either way no one needs to be smelling your shit.

Cheap and frugal are two differnt things! If I can get the used filter for next to nothing then spend 100 on new carbon to fill it up I'll have the same effect as a new expensive one. Right?
I try to DIY when I can so that I save a few bucks but I like to do my research first:)

I'm hoping to pick up http://www.amazon.com/PHRESH-CARBON-FILTER-1400-CFM/dp/B002JLAA9E but used and without the prefilter in addition to an inline fan, hydro trays (for future use) from a storage shed auction for 75!
The lady says there's a few other things that she does not know what they are as well:)

Are you filtering an entire room and/or rooms? Or is this a cabinet?

Stanley and Lasko blower fans and DIY filters have worked just fine for me now for four years. That filter seems real pricey, at least to me.

Right now I have nothing set up... I will be filling up few rooms as time progresses. I need to go to home depot and get some lumbar and tools to build a frame for my first 8x10. I ended up picking up the filter, an electrical pannel and a hood, the fan was missing when I got there and the trays were chewed on by their guard dog so I don't think I could have used them:(
She said they had been in storage for one year and the date on the filter is 2010, so I'll assume it has one year of 'use' on it.
For cleaning the filter is it okay to use r/o water from the machines at the co-op (mine has free filtered water for members) or does it have to be distilled? I'm going to wait till night time to 'cook' it in the oven since there are no normal people strolling about my neighborhood, unless you consider hookers and winos normal...
