Carbon filter inside tent, fan outside?

Will some of the effect be lost if I set it up this way? The fan makes so much noise that I want to set it up with around 3 meters distance from the carbon filter.

Wouldn't your fan be louder outside of the grow space?

I ran my fan as you detailed for several harvests. Then I shoved it in a $5 filing box stuffed with duct insulation, and hung it from the handle in my tent. Reduced noise immensely, even just keeping it inside the tent makes it quieter with the thick walls of my secret jardin.

That might be, but I am currently sleeping right besides it, so i think gonna put the fan in my attic-like room right besides and put cardboard in the entrance of it.

But what it really like to do is put it in a box. Is it safe to put the fan in for example a cardboard box then fill it up with bubblewrap and small styrofoam pieces and then close it up and wrap it up with duct tape?

That is how I have my filter and fan set up. I use a speed controller in order to keep desired temps.

I've checked out fan speed controllers, will this work with any fan? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plug-in-Hydroponics-Grow-Light-Fan-Speed-Controller-/300618574475

I did just the opposite...for same reasons VAtransplant mentioned (noise and smell level)....fan inside, carbon filter outside. Air (from fan) traveling through carbon filter....that's the premise...keeping air outside aroma free.

given your current design; most of your fan noise will be a result of 'whooshing" air. putting it in the attic-type room will reduce that whoosh!

Attic like room.........................how far away is it from the tent?

Also you need to ensure there are no little leaks in the duct work that will still be in the tent as odor will bypass the filter.

And no i don't think ya want that speed controller.Cheap speed controllers are gonna make the motor on the fan hum as you dial it down.

Lets just say I have a big bedroom with the tent in it, and from one of the walls in the bedroom theres a little door wich leads to a room thats freezing cold with bad isolation, so basicly its directly besides the room with my tent in.

I have just put it up with the fan about 2,5m inside the attic-like room and made a cardboard door to seperate the rooms. Sorry for bad explanation, might make a drawing that shows it more clearly, but it seems to work, there is negative pressure in the tent and if it were to start smelling out my room I can just move the fan 2-3 meter further in and attach it to a vent wich leads straight outside (but im paranoid about that, lol)

I might start experimenting with making a box for the fan to eliminate all sound, is it safe to say for example.. duct tape the whole fan, or wrap it in bubblewrap?

Damn, that sucks. Is there anything besides making a humming sound that could occur with a cheap speed controller? Like my fan catching fire or something. I seem to have the fan noise almost under control now but its really sucking my tent in a lot, so I might need to turn it down a little notch.

It certainly worked, even though smell isn't a problem yet I can see this being just as effective as having the fan inside the tent, but with better space and less noise

So pushing air through the carbon filter works just as good as pulling through it?

This is how its set up now. I might eventually attach the fan to vent shown in the diagram but this seems to be working fine, wont know for sure until the plants start to smell, but theres negative pressure in the tent, so after what I've read, it should be fine.

You mentioned filling a box with bubble wrap or something. I'd choose something else to fill it with, bubble wrap doesn't really reduce noise. I had some insulated duct (which by itself reduces noise a ton) but I just scrapped a two foot section of it and stole the padding for packing my fan box. Worked great.

And instead of a cardboard door, if you want something a little more rigid, consider foam insulation board. I took the door off of my crawl space and traced it on some foam insulation board (4x8 sheet was like $8 at Lowes, I think 3/4" thick). I cut it a hair larger than the outline and was able to just wedge it in the opening. Then I traced a 6" opening and shoved some duct in there and used it as a cool air intake for my room. But anyway, just a thought...

Just make sure your flexible duct has no leaks and preferably insulated since your sucking out....don't want to suck in any stink that doesn't go through the filter. Negative pressure is great

Hmm, do you think filling up the box with some pillows could work? I dont really have much to choose from and I'd like to not spend money on a can of foam- but safety first so I'd like to hear if you/anyone else think it would be safe? I dont want to burn down the house, it would be better to just invest in some foam wich is proven to be safe then, or am I wrong?

I made a new door today from styrofoam instead, much more rigid as you said, now I just need to find a solution on getting it isolated around the '' vent tube '', maybe I should just make a hole in the styrofoam board and run it through that.

Hey mojave, I havent heard about ozone generators before but ill check it out, is it for smell elimination what?
