Carbon Filter Idea, Would this work??

I'm doing a new bloom room and i've come up with an idea for a carbon filter, but i'm not sure whether it will work or not.

I have an area in the new room thats not currently used, but i think could house both the carbon filter and my 250mm RVK effectivly.

Here is a diagram or what i am thinking about.

... Basically instead of having a big drum style carbon filter i would like to use a screen instead.

Surely if the box behind the screen (containing the fan) is sealed then having the fan going would draw dirty air through the filter screen and then out the back (via ducting).

Would this work?

How thick would the layer of carbon have to be?..I was thinking a couple of inches would be about right

You suggestions are most appreciated.

Then I suggest blowing off a carbon filter and using a vaportek 4000 optimum odor neutralizer.Rezdog uses them in his sealed room and says they work perfectly,I'm about to plug mine in and give it a try.Cost 100 dollars for the unit and around 40 apiece for the 120 day carts.

whered you get your vapor>? Have they dropped in price>?

i have the vtek4000 but got it for around 150, i believe (cant say for sure =P)
but i must say, i LOVE the thing. It was my only odor control and it worked verrrry well!

definately reccommend them! the cartridges are abit pricey, but, can u put a price on peace of mind and freedom>? i think not!

I got mine at Colker Janitorial 412-391-1955,the unit was 110 I believe.Anyway the total for the unit and two 120 day carts was 201.43.A small price to pay if they work as well as I hear everyone saying they do.Its totally the end of any odor issues whatsoever unless they bring a dog into my yard lol.

So what is this vaportek 4000 then? I've not heard of it before, but they sound like its what i was planning. Anyone got any links or is using one?

EDIT:- http://icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=11927 <- just found this

I'd just like to add that I'm UK , and I don't much fancy shipping anything through the facists that to call themselves US customs....i'm not anti-US btw, just had a bad experience.

2 inches is too thick for a 250 to draw through, and flow through is the key. Your design looks like it would work fine. I would buy 2 filters the right size, lay one down, cover with half inch or CM of carbon, and tape down the other filter on top. Make up an extra to be ready when needed. Have fun, you don't have to throw money at problems to solve them.

spot on Haps...after reading through the thread i found i decided it wasn't what i wanted anyways.

The idea of using a carbon screen rather than a tube came to me whem i was remembering the filters they had above the grills in a restaurant i used to work in.

I'm gonna be making the screens rather than buying them though, seems like a simple task to me. Surely i have to make a screen with some sort of "fine mesh" type stuff, then i can just empty and re-fill the carbon every few months. a bit like a thick picture frame with 2 layers of "mesh" and some activated carbon inbetween?

How about a "filter pocket" one you could just dump and refill? Fix it to whatever frame you find or build with tape or screws. Leave the top so you can "top off" after it settles? Good luck.

don't forget o use some sort of prefilter, just to make the carbon last a lil longer

Haps:- Yep thats the idea, leave the top of the frame as "easy removable" and when the carbon is not working i just pour it out and re-fill.

irishSoCo: - "prefilter" as in some sort of cloth or something over the outside of the screen?

I'd like to add at this point that at the moment i don't use a filter at all, i just vent right up the chimney....but its still only my first real grow and the genetics i have germing and vegging for my next grow are "apparrently" stinky as hell! The air has to stay in contact with the carbon for a certain period of time to give the carbon time to do it's job.

I use flat filters in all my gardens, but they are about 2-3" thick each. I use the Stanley blowers to drive my ventilation systems and build my own filters using activated pelletized carbon. One of the tricks is to compact the carbon in the filter to keep it as dense as possible.

Always put a regular furnace filter before the carbon to catch dust & particles. This will help the carbon last longer.

You can also put a layer of the crystal kitty litter in so the air flows through the kitty litter before it flows through the carbon; the litter will absorb a lot of the moisture from the air and extend the life of the carbon.
