Carbon Filter for smoking?

Hey

This is my first post but I've been lurking for a while.

I built myself a carbon filter and was wondering if I could smoke into it to hide the smell of smoke. I tried using a soda bottle with dryer sheets shoved in it, but that failed me :fsu:. I figured a little carbon filter might do the trick though. It's made out of a little rubbermaid tub and has a huge fan on it.

Anyone have any experience with this? I searched but could only find info on the growing aspect, not the smoking itself.

Until I figure something out I'm banished to the car :joint: :spank:

I dunno - I've always used dryer sheets etc. My only suggestion is to try a thinner tube (such as a paper towel tube) rather than a soda bottle. Just pack it with dryer sheets and hold the end in with your finger when you blow through it.

Maybe that'll work for you?

I had a simular problem a few years back...I tried the dryer sheet thing and it simply didn't work well. What did work was buying some army surplus gas mask filters off of ebay. I got a pack of 5 for 25 bucks (sweedish surplus in a sealed can). I then blew smoke through the non-treaded side of the filter and nothing came out the threaded side (I'm not sure if they actually are directional, but I simply blew in the direction that the gas mask user would recieve air). Make sure to get a good seal...some friends just couldn't understand the concept and blew in the general direction of the filter hole without creating a seal. Each filter worked great for about 2 months and then the performance started to degrade a bit as it got clogged up and was hard to blow through. It works great when smoking in the car as well. Nothing else I tried really worked.

TheGoodStuff - Already tried a toiler paper tube, epic fail. Thanks for the suggestion though.

LoveRises - Your suggestion is pretty clever. I even happen to have gas mask filters... they're just 3000 miles away! Damnit! I wonder if theres an army surplus around here...

I'm not sure. The paper towel tube always worked for me. The trick is to get a good seal with the outside of your cheeks, if that makes sense.

Well, currently trying it as we speak.

I took every precaution I could think of. I smoked through new fabric cloths into a small duct I made for my carbon filter and put a towel on the door. :joint: :muahaha:

You know, you could probably just blow the smoke out the window...
If you have neighbors and they're far away, they'll just think you're smoking a cig.
Unless you've got a bong with you haha.

Thanks for the suggestion masterglow... but I'd have to be 2 feet tall to smoke in my grow "room".

Thanks for the new suggestions goodstuff. I tried smoking out the window. I even tried smoking out the window through the tube!

I have good news however! The carbon filter seems to have worked perfectly! I toked two bowls through it and he was none the wiser (and I was smashed off my face...) :bongsmi:

Take it easy guys! If I can get my hands on a camera I'll show you my little creation, I think it's pretty spiffy myself.

smoke in the room that your grow cab or closet in all airs should be pullin to 1 area, if you have negative pressure...

Good Luck

my friends do this sometimes, jjust get a 4" fan and filter and put it on the floor

the fan is constantly pulling air towards it and filtering it through the carbon, it worke pretty well for clearing out a smoke filled room

i use to also have an oreck air purifier and it worked pretty well except for costing about $300

the best spoof tubes (what we call them) are made from gatoraide bottles. poke 5-6 holes in the bottom. don't make them to big or to small just a good size. fill the gatoraide bottle up with as many dryer sheets as possible, or as many as you think you'll need... i always stuffed them to the top of the bottle. use the bottle and press it against the screen out the window and its almost no smell. just make sure you're taking one hitters at a time.

believe me, a gatoraide bottle works better than a paper towel roll or some ghetto shit like that. i've heard of people using their carbon filter to smoke though...

I made one of these for when I was living with my parents.

I used an aluminum foil roll (stiffer than paper towel) and cut it in about half. I then used activated carbon sheets and cut 2 circles that fit inside the end of the tube. I hot glued one circle sheet to the inside of the end of the tube. Then I filled it up with activated carbon (about 5" deep) and then hot glued the other sheet to close it up. The key is to make one of the sheets about 1/2" inside the tube so its not flush with the tube. This allows your mouth to go into that end (your lips slightly go inside the tube and thus needs the space).

This works 100% with the vaporizer. I used it daily for about 6 months before I decided to just change the carbon to make sure it was working well. I have used it for smoking out of the pipe and bong and it works very well as long as you exhale slowly. You can still see the hit and the if you smell the air coming out it doesn't smell smokey at all just a little stale (not sure if its because all the crap/moisture that is exhaled into it).

This obviously does nothing with the smoke off a smoldering bowl after you hit it, so I use a suction cup (instead of my hand as I used to---just got too hot) to snuff out the bowl. I then re-inhale the smoke from the snuffed bowl and blow it out the filter as well. This method can be used with a bong as well.

If you have a few $ to spend listen to his advice you cant fail. you can smoke as much as you want and never be detected, just look at it as an investment.

That gas mask idea from the army surplus should really do the trick. Sounds like you solved your problem but if anyone else has the problem and wants to try it, you should. 311 (the band) uses a gas mask filter connected to a tube when they are on their tour bus. They said a friend made it for them after taking apart "the mute" which is a device you can purchase that does the same thing. No odor and no smoke comes out the other end of it, who wouldn't love that when trying to be discreet.
