Carbon filter and fan airflow

Hey guys,
I got a 4" carbon filter for my cab...
First of all, the cab is 1m x 0.5m x 1.65m, and im running a 400W in a cooltube, exhausted with a ruck100 (4" fan).
Now here is the thing:
The 4" carbon filter apparently has an airlow of 160m3/h, but my 4" fan's airflow is 220m3/h :chin:
Will this cause any problems?
Is the fan going to work too hard and overheat or eventually break?
Or will the filter not eliminate the smells properly?
The 5" filter has an airflow of 240m3/hour, would I be better off with one of those?

Thanks in advance for any input

Peace

I see a problem...the fan is rated for a higher flow than the scrubber - that means that the scrubber won't be able to clean the air to it's rated capacity. That isn't a big deal if the scrubber is oversized, but if it's marginal odor might end up leaking out the exhaust.

The rating on the scrubber is the amount of air that will have 99.5% of odor molecules removed...if you move more air across it, then it's efficiency will drop. Personally, I'd go with the 5" or get a speed controller for the fan.

i agree with the sandman, you want to pull that air over the carbon as slow as possible, sometimes its better to buy a larger carbon filter or one rated for a higher cfm than your fan. This allows you to pull air past each piece of carbon at a much slower rate, and that makes the air much cleaner smelling IME.

Another thing to keep in mind with scrubbers is you lose about 10% (what someone told me way back) flow off the top due to resistance. Add more resistance for duct length and any bends. I recently read on the Odor Sok website they claim there's a loss of 20-30% flow with carbon scrubbers and their units only lose 8%. A 30% loss would put you at the rating of the filter but why guess? I'd agree you'd need a controller but that always tweaks me a little cause you don't know the actual cfm rate when you make an adjustment in this case. I'd also opt for the bigger filter and underdrive it as the filter would control odor better and last longer.

Thanks for all the responses guys, much much appreciated

In the end I decided to go with the 240m3/h 5" filter, and keep my 4" fan (220m3/h). That way the odours should be delt with properly and the fan wont be working too hard.

Thanks again
