Carbon Filter and Exhaust problem?

Hi Everyone .

Im having problems with ventilation or rather the lack of smell control via the carbon filter

I have a grow tent 1.25*.1.25* 2.00.
160 mm spiro tubes for all ventilation except where it goes into the tent- 125mm flex tubing .
160mm Systemair K 160xl Fan with muffler going into a 125mm flexible tubing into the tent.
In the tent i have 20cm *60cm Carbon filter , i think the brand is GHE , not sure. Initially the carbon filter didnt work , not a big surprise as the fan was way too big. So I went and bought a speed controller ....Lit up an incense in the cab and tried all kinds of speeds , from creeping to jet engine and I can still smell the incense at the exhaust ?

Inside the tent the configuration is as follows...
CarbonFilter- Cooltube- flex tubing
Outside the tent ,its flex tubing into fan- muffler -exhaust

Everything is properly sealed.

Called the shop and apparently the filter is brand spanking new.

So my question is ....
A carbon filter should be able to kill the smell of an incense ? Am i right ? I must be doing something wrong .

Also I was pretty surprised that the speed controller actually makes the fan louder as i bring down the speed , is that normal or am i doing something wrong?

Any tips to get me going ?

You saying that it is venting the odor, or the odor is contained inside the tent? Not too sure what you are trying to say, but with the filter connected and air being drawn into it rather than being pushed should be doing the job.

Looks like you checked to see if it was of new stock, so maybe it might be time to switch brands and see how that goes. Might be bad carbon that had settled and is not working as it should be. Try giving the can a slight shake and see how much rattles around inside. You should not have too much noise from the carbon.

Smoke is a different animal too.

Hi , yeah - there is no smell outside the tent(in the room), so the fan is doing its job but there´s a lot of smell at the end of the exhaust( in another room). Maybe its wrong to use an incense/smoke for a test ? How is everyone testing their exhaust equipment ?

Im also wondering if anyone has encountered the increase in fan-noise with a stepless speed control ? When I lower the speed it starts by adding a ca 1 khz tone and as I go lower another tone appears at around 400 hz , really crazy resonances at some speeds.

Too noisy to use.

I went for the larger 160mm ventilation ducts (outside the tent) in order to get a big fan with a speed control to keep down the noise - bigger ducting - less noise.

However the Tent only has 125mm Ducting holes , which is why I had to keep everything in the tent at 125mm , including the filter .Apparently , at full blast the fan is pulling too fast through the filter. So I bought a speed control, this gets rid of turbulence noise but makes the fan noisy.

My Systemair K 160 xl - with rockwool wrapping -measures about 55 db at 2 meters in my measurements., A weight on full blast, maybe I should have gone with a larger filter that can handle more Cfm. That way i could have the fan going full blast and not being too fast for the filter.?

But, for now Id love to make this work without buying a bigger filter , so solving the noise issue with the fan and speed control would be a best case scenario.

Or , It could be that i have a fan that doesnt like the particular speed control i have ?
On top of all this I still have the problem of the incense not being filtered properly through the filter....no matter what speed i use.

I've got exactly the same setup, Tent, Rhino filter, cooltube and 250 m3h RKV fan. The filter was inside the tent and sealed and the smell was noticeable, don't know why. I switched the filter to outside the tent and it went away. I'm not saying it will work for you but it did for me. I now have air drawn through the open end of my cooltube to the fan and then ducted to just outside the tent.

In my experience a carbon filter wont take away 100% of smoke smell, but always takes care of all of the plant smell.

I know that with the 6" votrex I have with an odorsoc, not canister we can not smell anything. Best part with these are they are half the price and can be washed and put in the dryer if needed. They state they last a year, so we will see, but you are better off to pull through the filter rather than pushing or so I have been told.
