Car lights for curiosities sake....

The other day i was browsing my boxes of junk and found some headlights for a car it states that it is a pressurized lamp meaning its some sort of HID bulb, my question is that its got 3 prongs and i was wondering if it needs any additional hardware such as a ballast ect.... or if i can just attach + and - and grounded wires to the prongs and it will work, please let me know as i was gonna toss this light in my micro box as some supplemental HID lighting. thanks.

Depends - could be a halogen bulb (no good), not necessarily an HID bulb and if it is, yes it needs a ballast, one made especially for it and it's wattage. Best to check the code o the bulb with Google and see if any info comes up.

Don't bother, either way it won't work. Buy a 70w or 150 w hps security light and modify it for a remote ballast. Plenty of info here to do that if you wish.

yeah many non-hid bulbs will add xenon to the bulb envelope so it burns "whiter" but these are not hid auto bulbs....also hid auto bulbs are not true hid's but more like a short arc discharge lamp, that may not have the well rounded spectral output of a hid....i posted a thread a couple weeks back about 50 dollar hid auto kits and if they could be used to grow plants and got 0 replies....sounds still like something to investigate....

Cooper Lighting is the brand of 150 hps I got from Home Depot years ago. I've noticed these days that the HD or Crappy Tire here doesn't carry HPS lights anymore, or the bulbs. I wonder if they dropped those products cause they knew people were growing with them.....

Yup, nothing at HD and CT has halogen and mercury lights....both no good....

The 3rd prong is for the high beam - look inside the lamp, you'll see 2 filaments, so you have a prong each for common, low, & high beams.

I'm pretty sure that you have either a halogen, or quartz lamp... never seen an HPS or HID lamp in a car - I would think that the color temps, lamp temp & (lack of) brightness intensity would make any car headlight inpractical.
