Cannabutter made in mason jars

I am wondering if anyone uses the mason jar technique to make cannabutter? I have a friend who just recently informed me of how he makes butter and that this is how he prepares his more potent batches for his true med clients. First you start off with about a q/p of shake or well ground herb, and put it through an agitation process like you would bubblehash then you strain the mix again just like making bubblehash then combine the butter and slush mix together and place it in to mason jars. Once you place the mix in the jars and screw on the lids you simmer it over a very low heat to the point where it hardly simmers consistently for 8 hours a day for 1 week minimum.

Also being a stoner I am sure this isnt the full method, I will be asking him again today about the full method in steps and try to relay it here

If anyone else has used this method I would love to hear about it

sounds like alot of work. i use a qp per lb in a crock pot. but i dont play . anything over 8 hours in my kitchen is a waste of time.i have gone as long as 12 hours with no noticeable benefit

He claims the pressure built up inside of the jar from the heat expansion causes the buds to be "squeezed" to release more of the essential oils. I have not tried this method yet personally, but I dont want to if it wont be worth my time.

well find out his secret and let us know. i dont know everything and am willing to have an open mind and learn. sounds like bs to me tho.

i used coconut oil in mason jars in a closed crock pot worked like a charm

Exactly what we do. And for the OP, anytime you use water for an extraction your cheating yoursel, oils are the way to go, especially coconut oil and coconut substitutes well for butter in recipes. For details, Grey Wolf is the guy to see like Weird said.....scrappy

Is the coconut oil as versatile as the butter, meaning could I still bake a cake with the same density/fluffiness or even brownies & cookies? Or will I still need to use butter for certain things? Would love to switch to just using coconut oil instead for medicating, so much healthier

butter is best for baking, making fluffy airy cakes& biscuits butter is the key, not to say a recipe wont come out just as yummy n potent made w coconut or veg. oil.

Right on, thats what I was figuring. I am planning on using most of my trim and outdoor to make edibles once harvest comes around, I wish I didn't have to wait to try the method, but I cant justify making them at street price for good quality stuff.

Eight hours a day for a week is serious over-kill and totally unnecessary, that is far too long to cook it. Good change your butter will go rancid being heated and reheated that many times and for that long. Once 8 hour session should be enough, don't go past a total of 20-24 hours cook time, anything past that is a waste of time.

Uhh.. having worked extensively with mason and other canning jars... this is not a good idea.

Be prepared to lose to the pressure gods, when working with non-pressure quality glass.

Funny that I found this thread, my buddy was just telling me about this technique the other day.. I plan to make some cannabutter today or tomorrow and I might try this out!! :D

My buddy says instead of boiling the butter in water in a saucepan and adding in the bud, you bring the water to a slow boil, put the Mason Jar in the pan of simmering water and let the butter melt inside it, than put your weed in a cheesecloth Pouch, tie it up good, and put the "Pot Pouch" in the jar of melting butter and let simmer for a few hours.
... Than when your done you take the pouch out of the jar and squeeze any butter out of it that you can.. :rasta:

^^^^ This way the weed and the butter never touch any water and all you have to do is let the butter solidify when your done. I'm pretty sure you leave the mason jar open during the cooking process, so no worries about expanding pressure. Obviously you'll have more contaminants and such in the butter and maybe a stronger taste, but my buddy says this method is the best!

stronger taste for sure man. without the water to absorb some of the stuff its gonna be weed tasting for sure. i ilke the water lol. i now soak my weed a few times like a water cure before making butter. much cleaner tasting

Yeah I'll probably just stick to the old technique and use water, although a few friends like to taste the "weed" in their treats :)
