Cannabutter as medicine?

C

curts1

Hi,
I´ve found that cannabis is pretty much the only thing that keeps my arthritis pain at bay but I´m not always able to smoke so I´m thinking that butter might be an alternative.

But then I read about the extreme highs people are getting and it makes me wonder a) do I have the guts to try it? b) will it help alleviate pain?

I´m not that young anymore and I really don´t like getting totally blown away... :bashhead:

Advice appreciated.

just don't eat too much. start off slow. wait 2 hrs. if you are not high enough then have a little more. the big mistake i see folks do is eat a brownie or cookie and after an hour then say hey i'm not high yet and they eat another....then they really get high! sometimes too high.
if i eat too much it puts me to beddy bye. but if i eat the right amount...wow its perfect!

Lite, better make that 3 hours!

Lite, better make that 3 hours!

With some folks it takes that long! As an example of this, here's part of a report from 1912! The "Hasheesh" of the day was a thick oily liquid, more akin to modern hash oil. A minim is a drop.

Excerpts from
An Essay on Hasheesh:
Historical and Experimental
by Victor Robinson
Medical Review of Reviews 1912

My brother Frederic Robinson took 25 minims in the presence of some ladies whom he had invited to witness the fun. An hour passed without results. A second hour followed, but -- to use the slang of the street -- there was nothing doing. The third hour promised to be equally fruitless, and as it was already late in the evening, the ladies said good-by. No sooner did they leave the room, than I heard the hasheesh-laugh. The hemp was doing its work. In a shrill voice my brother was exclaiming, "What foo-oolish people, what foo-oo-ool-ish people to leave just when the show is beginning." The ladies came back. And it was a show. Frederic made Socialistic speeches, and argued warmly for the cause of Woman Suffrage. He grew most affectionate and insisted on holding a lady's hand. His face was flushed, his eyes were half closed, his abdomen seemed uneasy, but his spirit was happy. He sang, he rhymed, he declaimed, he whistled, he mimicked, he acted.....

Anyway, I think that shows that onset of effects can take more than 3 hours, even with a rather large dose. So don't have that next magic muffin too soon!

Hey yas Curts ....
Steele from tha GrindHouse . We were patients of Dr Fry and given a report conducted by herself with information she compiled from study's and testing . We will be posting this very important info at tha GrindHouse help desk , as we were asked by several folks on tha boards if we knew of a strain that could be potentially close to tha pain relieving effects of opium . I must say that edibles are SERIOUS biz. so please take things slow . I will give ya a bit to ponder till we get tha paper up . Doc Fry created a graph , illustrating a patients night time sleep and cannabinoid needs level ; By using tha hr. before bed as tha "loading phase" , a patient ingests an appropriate and tested dose , strong enough to sedate , keeping tha patient sleeping well and avoiding tha chronic pain . In tha morning tha "maintenance phase" starts and continues throughout tha day , tha patient is to continue medicating with edibles , but at 1/4-1/8 tha dose , allowing for work on whatever . They key is to go slow , finding yer peak level of cannabinoids and dosing accordingly . This is serious business so please heed tha warnings ....

I hope to have tha graph and report up in a couple weeks , lotta pressing issues , but you have tha general idea ,
I hope this proves some relief in your life ,
Sincerely ,
Steele

Hi and Thanks so far!

Yesterday I pulled three runts, about 1m high each and not bushy, that never would have matured. I´d like to make butter with them, weight wet is about 300gr. How much butter should I use? I guess the effect will be moderate at best cause I can´t really see any trichomes...

I have to turn around and give a lot of credit to PharmaPharmer for that one... 'washing' is a great technique, and his caramel recipe WORKS and is delicious!

So it´s now about 90 min since I took a big teaspoon in tea with honey and I started feeling a slight buzz about 30 min ago. The effect hasn´t really accelerated and since I have work tomorrow I won´t take another dose this evening -but tomorrow I´ll double the dose.

The smell of this is liked having cooked broccoli in milk...maybe I should go for baking or washing.

Or both!

PS This dose has killed some of my pain!

I am treated for MS and also know a good friend who is treated for MS. He had a bout of optic neuritis and it hadn't cleared up for over a year. He since has been eating a steady on/off diet of high-potency edibles for a few months mixed with smoking. The other day he was so excited to tell me that his vision was coming back! I knew why. ;)

This guy can also handle large amounts of cannabinoids without losing the ability to perform complex tasks. Not everyone is capable of that. Maybe because his mind/body knows he NEEDS it?

bless...

Well yesterday sure backfired! I took three big teaspoons in my tea/honey/cinnamon drink and two hours later I was lightheaded, nauseous and had to leave a party I was attending.

I then slept for 13 hours straight.

At no point did I feel high or buzzed, just sick.

I´ll let this butter sit until I´m finished harvesting, after that I´ll beaf it up with some trimmings and give it another try.

also something you might want to try is tincture... you can do glycerin or alcohol...

I do cold tinctures and haven't experimented with warm, but cold tinctures work real well on inflamation, I think this might help with your arthritis. (worked wonders on my near 3rd degree burns)

all ya do, and I'll only explain with alcohol here as I have no glycerin experience... is
-take 1 bottle of your favorite alcohol or if you don't like alcohol... something you can stand. (short aside.... many folks will say you can only use everclear or pure grain alcohol for tinctures.... this is complete bullshit. many herbalists will use even just 20 or 30% alcohols for their tinctures. Its just a matter of how much plant cannabinoids you can extract... but don't underestimate how much that alcohol can absorb. Unless you absolutely cram, cram, cram, cram, cram the bottle full I would highly expect you can't fill up all the alcohol molecules of everclear with cannabinoids. I like to use a decent bourbon or whiskey)
-take a glass jar and fill it with your herb... note that fresh leaves are GREAT! for inflammation. so don't just stick all bud in there. Also, the root can help steady you and the stems can give stregnth both of which can help if the buds a knockout... and just in general... folks, start experimenting with all those 'waste' parts... all of the canna plant is good for medicine.
-pour liquor over herb until herbs are covered and let set for at least 2 weeks, maybe a month. then strain, and put in tincture bottles (which should be available at your local co-op or online or a health food store).

*start with lower dosages and get a feel for what you made. The great thing about tinctures is when taken on the tongue, that is internally, one gets an almost immediate effect... not to say it won't get stronger... but its nothing like the roller coaster come-up of heavyiliy herbed baked goods.

*also, and this is key... tinctures can be used on the source of your pain aswell... so any specificlly bad joints or whatever it can be used on. The alcohol will smuggle the meds right through the skin.

another thought.... i like to throw a little herb in whatever i'm cooking, whether it be soup or whatever... as long as it has some fat in it.... now I say a little and I mean it. I do it all the time, so its not to get real blitzed, its just so I always have those helper cannabinoids in my system.

Curts , sorry to hear 'bout you getting sick off tha meds . All too frequently we hear this , and tha reason for our warning . Edibles are POWERFUL , but now that you have an idea of what yer peak usage would be , decrees tha dose a bit and retest to be sure .... Now you have yer recommended dosage . During tha day , you can use 1/8 of tha dosage to "maintain" throughout tha day .

I have tha full paper by Dr. Fry , though I have some work to do with tha graphs . We have a thread started at our helpdesk .

Hope this helps ,

Do consider tincture. This thread http://boards.cannabis.com/concentrates/82380-definitive-green-dragon-revised-updated-combined.html is, well, definitive. It describes the "hot" method (basically you simmer the toasted ground herb in alcohol).

You do want to use the highest proof alcohol you can get. Water does not dissolve cannabinoid resin, but it does dissolve other things which do not get you high but do taste vile. I have used both 151 & 190 proof Everclear & not noticed a great difference in the tincture.

I've had good glycerin tincture (bought from an LA dispensary), but I tried to make some & it didn't turn out well. Reading various threads on glycerin tincture, that seems to be a common occurrence.
