Cannabis Genome Project

Sadly no details of individual gene counts, unique gene counts, or comparison gene counts. More of a family tree than a genetic guide.
Actually let's call it what it actually is. An attempt to create a trademark register for cannabis.

You need to go read their page(s) instead of making assumptions.

It was me who first highlighted the service on this board. Before I posted that they were offering the service free of charge, the only person on here that was aware of them was Sam, who was asking for samples to be sent to him so he could send the DNA into them in his name. I'm not criticising Sam at all, he is a legit operator who can have his name registered in a way most of us can't, but there's no point in telling me I don't know what I'm talking about.

with all due respect GMT, from my understanding, you have it backwards...

YES... it will allow breeders in the future who breed new, novel varieties, to secure a copyright to their work... protecting them from having large commercial farms growing their "strain" without paying licensing fees and protecting them from hack breeders making self crosses, f2s and simple outcrosses.

BUT, the main goal it to actually keep what already exists within the collective cannabis germplasm in the public domain so that it CANNOT be registered by any individual or corporation IE so no one can copyright OG Kush, Chemdog, Grandaddy purps etc. etc. etc. and keep others from growing or making $$$ from said genetics which already exist.

the criteria for copyrighting any variety based on genetics will require that said genotypes have unique genetic sequences of SNPs, resulting in unique phenotypic expressions, not already in existence in other varieties....

or so is my understanding

Really? Commercial altruism? Investors spending cash to prevent anyone on earth making money on something? Not to mention it doesn't do that, can't do that, and came about After people started doing that!
Look up guenivere gw pharma, now part of Bayer.

That which is already in the public domain cannot be copyrighted or patented.

Everything you can see on Phylos galaxy is in the public domain. Therefore, everything that is in the Phylos galaxy, that is not patent or copyright protected, cannot be.

What has that got to do with their business contacts?

that's not what I said, I said that it would prevent people from stealing varieties and selling them without a license, as well as prevent the copyright of varieties already in the public domain so that EVERYONE can make money off them without paying 1 person or group...

and no, I'm sure once legal on a federal level, it would cost a pretty penny to have them do a full genomic analysis on a line of cannabis so that an individual or corporation can prove that they bred, and obtain a copyright for a new unique variety of cannabis.

it can be done, and has been done... sam and rob licensed their varieties to GW pharm a long time ago... and got paid pretty well. how could they sell a license, if they weren't able to copyright their work?

Mj, until they post the full genetic code to each variety, and prove what each gene does, and lists every purpose that they can be used for, there will always be new patents available.

Infinitesimal, you say it prevents anyone stealing varieties and simultaneously say it makes them available for all to sell. Can't have it both ways.
