Cannabis Comes to Kansas?

Kansas will get its first shot at legalizing medical marijuana as a bill has been introduced into the state legislature. Rep. Gail Finney from Wichita, introduced the bill to help people in pain.

Kansas has become infamous for busting car loads of pot transiting thru the state from elsewhere. So any law that decriminalizes or legalizes cannabis will surely be fought by Kansas LEOs as it's become a huge revenue generator for them.

In a related story, the Feds busted a Lawrence, Kansas shop selling K2, containing a synthetic marijuana like substance, that has yet to be outlawed in Kansas.

I can't believe this has even come up! I figured Kansas would be the last state to come on board. Kansas is as conservative as it gets.

Anyone know where to find the bill?

Once the pigs steal the weed how do they make money from it? Or do the pigs just steal a lot of cash at the same time as weed? Wouldn't seem like a good idea to have lots of cash and weed in the same spot.

Funny story about Kansas. When I was in the Army ROTC 20years ago, I was sent to Fort Riley, KS for an advanced training camp. After exiting the "gas chamber", I was walking and trying to clear my eyes and respiratory system of the gas. When my eyes finally cleared, I found myself in a HUGE (many acres) field of beautiful 6' marijuana plants. The Wizard of Oz line, "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore" came to mind. I asked the bus driver about it when we were being transported back to the barracks and he told me it was just wild hemp that had once been cultivated on the post for its fiber.

Coming back to my senses in the middle of that "field of dreams" was truely the highlight of my trip to Kansas!

unfortunately i'm sure this will get buried in red tape or voted down, kansas is too conservative.

it sucks to be a pothead in KS.

it would be great for Ks to legalize medical use, im tired of hearing from people where i live talking about our neighoring state Co being legal. more differ strains to choose from instead of mexically brick weed hopefully.

First of all when someone is found in Kansas with cannabis, they ain't going nowhere except right to a Kansas prison.

So the police confiscate EVERYTHING, including the vehicle, money, and any other valuables they find. Typically vehicles are put up for auction with the proceeds going to fund the police in vague ways. Police often get to buy these cars themselves for next to nothing if they want them.

If you're a grower in Kansas, they'll take your house, and any property you have. They'll do this in any state, doesn't have to be Kansas. But Kansas seems to like getting out-of-staters just passing thru with some pot....

thats any state thats not friendly(will take your stuff) but what yougot to remember is that diffferent parts of the state have opposing views and you see this if you know any thing about casinos in kansas same thing with opinions everyones got one and they like to vote. you have ultra-conservatives in the west(farmers,houswives and rednecks an wrestlers) All the industry is in the urban centers (kc,witchita, topeka) which lie in the eastern half of kansas. Hence people have different outlook concerning mj and it even filters down to your local law enforcment(the views). My best tip for you is to not move product during the so called peak-season cause they'll be sittin waitn forsome paronoid driver that passes bye who freaks out when they see the Troopers. Thats how they do it .sit wait in the middle of the median and start fishin . Heres an idea ,wave to to them, and 9times out 10 they will wave back(their straight country) Dont fuckn speed cause their gonna want know what your big hurry is and try not to be MEXICAN w/ texas plates thats a no no and your ass will get pulled over quick. You have to know that the cops treat work like business . kck po-po very liberal views(real people who understand, weeds way safer than booze) Ive been detained and caught in the act burnin big blunts in my truck and they said MR.??? have a nice day . one even said that stuff smells so strong I think its gettin me confused.(that aint no lie either)

I wrote to the two Representatives in the story and got good feedback...see below.

So please write to them and just state your case. Don't be a dick about it or a stoner, just plead your case politely.

My letter:

Dearest Mr. Schwab,

I am very conservative. I do not use marijuana.

I must plead with you to please study the subject of Medical Marijuana more closely.

I can only speak from personal experience. My wife has
severe female hormonal issues. She has tried many solutions, but
will not use medications with unacceptable side effects, which are
worse than her condition.

She has experimented with marijuana in the past and it has worked
amazingly well with absolutely no side effects. However, she is
unable to use it, since it is illegal.

We have considered moving to a state where she would not be seen as a criminal for using a natural herb to treat her condition, but we are live-in Caregivers for my Mother, who is dying and this move would not be acceptable at this time. Also, moving to another state and starting over would not be a great idea in this current economy.

I was born and raised in Kansas, I love it here and would truly like
to live out the rest of my life here with all of my family.

Please reconsider your position on this controversial subject. I see
from your website that you are involved in health care, so I am sure you are a compassionate person that has people's health and well being in the forefront of your thinking and want to do what is right.

Medical Marijuana would help thousands of XXXXX.

Mr. XXXXXXX,

Thank you for your supportive email and I am sorry to hear about your wife's condition. It is sad that anyone in Kansas should have to consider leaving the state to get some relief from pain or prosecution. I am hopeful and prayerful that we will be able to change the laws in Kansas.

I am also really glad that you sent Rep. Schwab a letter. I think he must have read it and many others, because yesterday he told me that he had received many letters and emails from people that were dissappointed in him and he was reconsidering the issue. I guess we will see in a few weeks if he is sincere.

So far, the Kansas Medical Marijuana Act bill HB 2610 has received a lot of favorable support according to several polls. Ranging from 58% to 75% approval across the state. Currently, the bill is in the Health and Human Services Committee and the Chairwoman Brenda Landwehr said she will try to give it a hearing after February 20th.

In the meanwhile, I encourage you to also write the other members on the committee and urge them to support the bill.

I agree with you there. Busting people with pot is a huge part of their economy especially with all the tourism that goes on there. Plus all the old retired people who still believe in reefer madness swarm there and have time to vote.

Currently, Chairwoman Rep. Landwehr of the Health and Human Services Committee has stated she will try to give the Medical Marijuana Bill a hearing after the Feb. 20th turnaround without a specified date. And she also stated that she will not work the bill despite the hearing.

So, without knowing whether or not we would have a opportunity to have a hearing, a supportive group from different parts of Kansas has decided to meet. You are welcome to attend and provide suggestions. Or, if you can't make it and would like to be included, please email me or give me a call.

In the meantime, I will try to keep you up-to-date on the status of the bill.
