Cannabis-based medicines may be legalised in Ireland

Some good news for once....

Minister of State at the Department of Health Kathleen Lynch, in a Dail reply, said her Department was examining the issues associated with allowing cannabis-containing products to be used under controlled circumstances for patients with specific conditions, in the same way as otherwise illegal drugs such as morphine and methadone are currently used.....Minister Lynch was replying to a PQ from Independent Deputy Luke 'Ming' Flanagan.

It appears neither this government nor any likely future government will make any drastic changes to the law before it is done at an EU level.

Spanish pharma company Almirall has started a second wave of regulatory filings in Europe for Sativex.......Almirall has already launched Sativex (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol) in its first markets - Spain, Germany and Denmark - in 2011, and is awaiting approval in Austria, Sweden, Italy and Czech Republic.
The latest round of filings have taken place in in Belgium, Finland, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Slovakia.

Deputy Luke ’Ming’ Flanagan asked the Minister for Health (James Reilly *) if he will consider making Sativex available on prescription through chemists here

Minister of State at the Department of Health (Deputy Róisín Shortall) replied

"Cannabis is designated as a Schedule 1 controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. As the law currently stands, it is not possible for cannabis-based medicinal products such as Sativex to be prescribed by a medical practitioner in Ireland. I am aware that claims have been made in respect of the possible health benefits of cannabis-based medicinal products for patients suffering from certain conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis. I am also aware that Sativex is authorised in the UK for the relief of spasm in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Accordingly, my Department is examining the issues associated with applying controls, similar to those that apply to other controlled drugs that can be misused, such as morphine and methadone, to cannabis-based medicinal products to permit them to be prescribed and dispensed in Ireland."

Most patients who would potentially qualify for this would recieve it free under the medical card scheme.

Mr Flanagan described the current Government policy of prohibiting the supply of cannabis-based medicinal products as “heartless and cruel”.He said Ms Shortall’s response “gives room for hope” to sufferers of conditions such as MS.

The chairman of the Irish Patients’ Association, Stephen McMahon, last night welcomed the Minister’s statement that the Government is considering allowing Sativex to be prescribed.
