Cannabinoids promote embryonic and adult hippocampus neurogenesis and produce anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects

The hippocampal dentate gyrus in the adult mammalian brain contains neural stem/progenitor cells (NS/PCs) capable of generating new neurons, i.e., neurogenesis. Most drugs of abuse examined to date decrease adult hippocampal neurogenesis, but the effects of cannabis (marijuana or cannabinoids) on hippocampal neurogenesis remain unknown. This study aimed at investigating the potential regulatory capacity of the potent synthetic cannabinoid HU210 on hippocampal neurogenesis and its possible correlation with behavioral change. We show that both embryonic and adult rat hippocampal NS/PCs are immunoreactive for CB1 cannabinoid receptors, indicating that cannabinoids could act on CB1 receptors to regulate neurogenesis. This hypothesis is supported by further findings that HU210 promotes proliferation, but not differentiation, of cultured embryonic hippocampal NS/PCs likely via a sequential activation of CB1 receptors, Gi/o proteins, and ERK signaling. Chronic, but not acute, HU210 treatment promoted neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of adult rats and exerted anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects. X-irradiation of the hippocampus blocked both the neurogenic and behavioral effects of chronic HU210 treatment, suggesting that chronic HU210 treatment produces anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects likely via promotion of hippocampal neurogenesis.

I really like the term neurogenesis, it makes my brain feel all warm and tingly when I hit the bowl.

why not? i read in some article, where they tested on lab rats, one group got only alcohol (in certain doses), and the other groupe alcohol and cannabinodol, guess what,... after some time only the alcohol group showed brain damage induced by the toxicity of alcohol... the other group showed near to or zero degenerative signs -> could be that the destroyed braincells got "regenerated" by the cbd... or at least, the cbd counteracted the degeneration...

I just realized Cannabis may be a Smart Drug or Nootropic. It is neuroprotective, promotes neurogenesis, fosters long term memory and increases awareness.

i put a post in as my old user name when i joined in 08 saying how i feel like charlie from the book flowers for Algernon (or robert dinero int he movie awakenings)

it was as if i was coming out a fog where i could not properly focus and think

pot fixed neurological dysfunction in my brain

took years but fuck here i am

i think big alcohol big tobacco and big pharma know their drugs and propaganda fuck up cognitive reasoning

big reason pot is a threat

My experience was the same. I rediscovered cannabis in my mid 20s. Smoked some weed, hopped on my bike and somehow found my way out of the maze loop my mind had been stuck in for so long. Cannabis literally saved my life.

Agreed.

If only they could do studies here in the US....the benefits of MJ are wondrous. But we all know that already, now if the politicians would only listen, and learn!!!

yes it is, which explains why people are so dumb. They think weed will hurt them and they drink all the time.

sheeple I believe the term is

The owners of the politicians know the truth well, politicians are snakes without any real credibility, like a misleading pop-up add meant to look like a virus scan to help you, when in fact they don't want to help you at all. (or their twisted idea of helping others is to allow private interests to manipulate the government in order ro horde as much as possible so that some can trickle down filtered through their bullshit ideas of how things should be) As Weird said, pot is a threat. Just look at how easily the wealthy maintain their interests in the US, we have to show the politicians their stupid little jobs are on the line, then they'll listen... if they don't already have a job lined up with the company they betrayed their country for.

the conflicting interests make my head spin, these people should be ashamed but we as a society accept this as the way it is for some awful reason
