This stuff is great, so I figured I'd share it with you guys. I LOVE it, and have even been using the non-medicated 'control' run I did as lip balm now that it is getting cold and dry up here in New England.
The skin balm is based on olive oil, lanolin, and beeswax. The wax came from the candle-making section of a box-store craft supply place, the lanolin from a health-food store, and the olive oil from the supermarket, DUH.
The essential oils also came from the health food store- choose your faves but the combination I like is lavender and grapefruit, or sweet geranium and myrrh. These were chosen not only for their scent but for their antiseptic qualities.
First make your cannabis olive oil extract. I used waste trim and bud that had gone moldy on me and was not suitable for cooking. I aim for about 2g ground dry trim/bud/shake per fluid ounce oil, cooked overnight on 'low' in a crock pot with water (stir when you can), and separate out with a lab-grade sep funnel after straining. If you don't have a separatory funnel around, either go knock on the door of your local meth lab and borrow theirs, or if you don't want to get shot at, fudge one together out of a 2L soda bottle with a doctored-up cap. Hint: hydro fittings, flexi tubing, and a screw clamp... if you can grow weed, you can figure this out.
Recipe-Texture is that of a tinned lip balm- it's quite stiff.
Ingredients, by weight:
28g beeswax
56g olive oil (use plain oil for placebo and canna-oil at 1g bud/14g oil)
5g lanolin
Vitamin E gelcaps (2)
Essential oils of your choice
Weigh out all of the above and place in a suitable melting vessel. Mine is a ~12floz. capacity Turkish coffee pot with a very long handle. It came from a flea market but I've seen them at imported handcrafts shops for a reasonable price.
Place in a saucepot with 2-3" of water in it, on very low heat. The ingredients will melt at ~170'F so you don't need to boil the water. Agitate constantly.
When the beeswax has melted fully, take the mixture off the ehat and pour it out into a tempered-glass or ceramic dish. Put this in the refrigerator for about a half hour to set and then test the 'feel' of the surface. If it is too stiff for your liking, you'll add about 5-10g additional oil at the next step. Repeat test and oil addition if desired.
Scrape back out into melting vesselt and re-melt. If you liked the feel of the balm, add no more oil.
Once you have added any additional oil that you felt it needed, turn off the heat but keep the melting pot in the water bath.
Add:
10 drops geranium oil
5 drops myrrh oil
~1000 IU equivalent Vitamin E oil from piercing the gelcaps it is commonly sold in
Swirl very well to mix and then pour into tins. The tins can be found in the wedding favors section of crap- I mean, craft- stores.
