jusr bought 20 bags of canna coco and was suprised at the lack of quallity compared to the sri lankin brand also sold here at south of the equator there is quite large pieces of coir which means to me it is not well strained ,as the sri lankin brand is triple strained makes for planting out 200 seedlings a real chore .i am sure it will do the job but they have lost a customer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

larger chunks are better. I have never used canna coco...but I have used a few other brands of coir...and I have switched to coco chips, as I like the larger pieces for airation and water retention, without becoming water logged, which coir will do.

I'm using the canna mix of coir and peat and I think it's the peat that's nice and chunky, might be diff than the product your using tho.

No...peat is something all together different. I am using coco chips. They are chunks of coco husks that have not been ground down to a fine dusty fiber.

Coco chips are not in any way like coir, or peat.

Actually what I meant was the canna coir mix I have is a mix of peat and coir, the chunks I have in mine are peat (and probably coir too). It's a lovely mix, my girls love it. Just went to the canna site and they don't seem to offer the mix I have, might have been old stock or something.

The site also says their coir never touches the ground, from the tree to processing, so at the very least it probably hasn't touched sea water so it should be cleaner than most coirs out there no?

BTW Father Jack, your avatar scares me! :)

From what I understand...canna coco coir is one of the better, cleaner brands out there. I ted to rinse my coco no matter who I get it from...just to be safe.

Agreed Father Jack, Wash your coco just in case it has any salts build up or wahtever stuff might also be in there.

AS for coco, I tend to use the fine coir to fill the pot...but lay down a layer of the coarse coco in the bottom as to eliminate as much of the finc coco trickling out of the pot during watering.

Also cal-mag with coco with will save you from the most common of def's in coco.

And of course Good luck!

Chunks aren't bad, there are 3 different types of Coco. One is called pith which is the most ground up kind of coco, then comes coir which isn't quite as finely ground up and allows more aeration as well as better drainage, then comes chips which are meant not to be broken up at all and allow very good drainage as well as the most aeration. These all depend on how you want to water and if you want a real "hydro media." If you have chips then you'll have more frequent waterings as well as more hydro like roots and a bit quicker growth than with Pith. Personally I plan to use chips for my ebbnflow set up because I need the most drainage. But if I'm handwatering the Pith isn't too bad and I like to use it for seedlings and clones. But the best mix would be a mix of 60-70% coir and 30-40% pith.
