Canadian Seedbank wants to invade Nepal with their seeds

Hey friends, the 2nd time now I've been stumbling across this "paper" of a Canadian Seedbank called "True North Seedbank" while googling around about cannabis in Nepal.

They want to export their seeds to Nepal to rival the native strains.


"...The main competition for the seeds that are shipped from the True North Seed Bank will be the seeds from cannabis plants that are already grown in Nepal. The Canadian plants should have superior genetics and should be more potent than the Nepalese cannabis, giving it a place on the
market in Nepal. The cannabis in Nepal before in was made illegal was sixty percent less potent
than the cannabis in North America today, so if that has stayed the same than the Canadian
product should be of higher quality....".

Bigger crops, more potent therefore better hash. I'm sure that the vast majority of of cash crop cannabis Worldwide has been hybridized. The Nepalese cultivators and hash producers are impoverished. Who wouldn't want to see them improve their standard of living via better seeds. With every other cash crop, this is the norm.

The plants growing in Landrace areas are locally adapted and should not be polluted.

What they plan on sending there has probably nowhere the same outdoor wild survival traits.

I'll preface this by saying that we don't know what they want to send there and what work has gone into it. Hopefully some proper breeding procedures were used and basic habitat considerations were taken into account. We don't know.

Who are we to tell a farmer in a foreign country what strain of cannabis he can or can't grow? For better or worse, it's his decision. For the most part, Nepalese farmers aren't stupid. They will test some patches before changing all of their crop. Farming has been going on thousands of years and selective breeding has been going on just as long. These so called "land race strains" are still the product of selective seed collection and basic experimentation. If those landrace farmers decide to grow poppies or cotton instead are we going to tell them they can't?

Ok, did anyone actually read the entire article? It clearly states that cannabis is illegal in Nepal and until that changes the shipping of seeds to Nepal is not possible. It was basically a speculative idea at best. Besides it was penned for True North Seed Bank which is black market here in Canada as are all other seed banks.

Come on man, read the article. They think they can sells seeds in Nepal for $10 - 15/seed. That's a weeks pay for a Nepalese farmer. It ain't gonna happen. And if weed is legalized there it's game on but TNS won't be a big player. But, someone should be collecting the existing seeds because places like Morocco, Columbia and all of Southeast Asia are all being hybridized even though cannabis is still illegal there.

smilley, cannabis is not illegal in Nepal as, among other uses, it's a food overthere. Ganja and charas use is illegal though, except on Shivaratri celebrations. Importing a couple k's of seeds shouldn't be a real challenge and being black market doesn't prevent seedbanks to do business and spread their production all around the world, so the scope of this article goe beyond "what if", it's more like a plan, and it reeks of both arrogance and ignorance.
