In contrast to the toe-the-line approach of Barack Obama, Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (and the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau) has announced his support for Legalization, Regulation and Taxation of cannabis on a national level.

Under Canada’s legal system, only the Federal government has jurisdiction over the criminal law. Should Justin Trudeau win the next election which is expected in October of 2015, he will be in a position to make Canada the first industrialized nation to completely legalize cannabis. Indeed, given that the provinces of Canada exclusively own and operate virtually all liquor stores in the country, it is expected that the provincial governments would be the parties with a monopoly on *selling* cannabis in Canada if it is legalized.

Trudeau has doubled down on the issue dramatically since his first test balloons on the subject earlier this year.

On July 23, 2013 at a community rally in Kelowna BC, Trudeau expressed his support not for decriminalization, but for outright legalization. The video of his announcement was posted to YouTube and soon went viral.

On July 25, 2013, Justin Trudeau confirmed his position in support of legalization to reporters from the Globe and Mail, Canada’s version of the New York Times.

On August 9, 2013, the Liberal Party of Canada added a petition to the party’s main website for Canadian to fill out in support of legalization, regulation and taxation of cannabis.

And today, on the Huffington Post Canada, Justin Trudeau admitted in a candid interview that he has smoked cannabis maybe five or six times, the last time as recently as three years ago at a dinner party for close friends that he was hosting. While he was not at the time the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, he was a sitting Member of Parliament.

Mr. Trudeau has engaged the public on the issue of marijuana legalization like no other political leader in Canada’s history and his candid revelations to reporters appear to be designed to keep him and the issue in the spotlight, highlighting that he is very serious about his support. Trudeau’s detractors on the left who have been outmaneuvered on an issue they previously owned have questioned Trudeau’s sincerity in support of legalization and have suggested he would not carry through on the promise if elected.

Reports today in Canada’s media concerning the revelation that Trudeau last used cannabis three years ago are national news throughout the land. It is expected by some that Trudeau’s strategy of admitting to recent cannabis use is to position himself as an honest politician with integrity who can be trusted to do what he has promised to do, all while disarming his political opponents from using the revelations against him as weapons in the 2015 election. By the time the election rolls around, two years hence, all of today’s revelations will have long receded in the rear-view mirror.

Curiously, given the timing of Trudeau’s announcement on July 23rd and the video having gone viral in the few days which followed it, no national public opinion poll by any media organization in Canada has been released since that time. Like in many countries, August is typically a month for vacations in Canada and public polling is rarely conducted during that month.

Still, since Trudeau’s initial announcement of his policy on July 23, there have been a number of calculated steps that Trudeau has taken since that time to retrench his position in support of cannabis legalization. If there has been any internal polling on how the issue is playing to voters over the past month, it has presumably been quite positive as there is no sign that Trudeau is going to change course. Indeed, at every available step, he has doubled down on it.

Currently, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals lead in public opinion polls and he would become the next Prime Minister of Canada if the election were held today according to the most recent polling figures. The Liberal Party in Canada is a mainstream political party and has been described as that country’s “natural governing party”. During the 20th century, the Liberal Party held power in Ottawa for 69 years, the longest duration in power of any political party among all Western democracies.

It would be much cooler if one of these guys would just say fuck it, and light up a joint at a press conference and finish the interview.

Actually, I think it would be FAR cooler if "one of these guys" gets elected and actually legalizes cannabis.

For the very good reason that nobody has ever done that. Ever. Trudeau looks like he will be the first.
