Greetings everyone, I have a 4'x2'x6 veg room with a 600 watt HPS reflector. Can you veg with this or do I need to use flourescents?

Whoa tiger, I am not your bro. I did a search on this topic and was not able to fine anything definitive! As you can see I am new to this forum, this my first post and probably last since you think you can speak to new members with disrespect. The more simmple and polite thing to do is, if you a member with 235 post you should have able to direct me in the right area without all the extra's
Thanks but your response still does not answer my question!

I have used HPS for vegging before. You will get a little more stretch between nodes, but it will work fine. I prefer to use MH myself. I use a smaller MH for vegging and a 600 HPS for flower. Like Devilweedseeds says. It will save a little cash that way.

Thanks Devil, greatly appreciated. I have a 8 x 8 flowering room with (2) 1000 watt hps, and a the veg room I mentioned above they are already setup and yes probably overkill. I have started from seeds and I am concerned that there will be to much light for the seedlings.

Cash is already spent surf! just trying not to spend more right now, What are the benefits using MH as oppose to HPS?

Littlefish - I'd start with the 600 24-30" above your seedlings. The light is overkill for sure in you veg space, but as long as you can control the heat (keep things between 70-80 deg F) you should be fine. As has been said many times already, do some reading. You can find just about anything you could ever want to know about growing right here. Lots of helpful people around also, but do yourself a favor and read because most noob questions have been asked and answered a million times already. Start a grow journal if you are wanting more specific help about your situation. Welcome to ICmag :good:

Greenpinky No worries at all man! yes I do need read more I know I going to make mistakes, not to mention I think I already made one....I germinated some seeds once they popped I put them in rockwool in a incubator with no light. I see some of the stems now about 2 1/2 inches and a few of them have wilted. I going organic so I think the next step is putting them in soil and under light. thats why I ask that question.

littlefish....you can veg under a 600 w very, very well...however it is just overkill for a room that size..and will get costly. your best bet is to pick yourself up a T5 4 foot 8 light from www.plantlightinghydroponics.com...when you save up the cash.

For seedlings...i would use a regular shop light or those fluorescents. You can veg your plants under the T5..and then when you are ready to flower...you can use that 600w.

Also.. if you really want to get fancy...get yourself a Quantum 600w digital ballast...runs about $160 - $180...and you can turn the power output down to half...that will save on your electric bill...and you wont need to have different lights if you don't want. Although..I do not recommend starting seedlings under anything but the flourescents. At least that is my opinion.

Good luck!@

Pizzaman, Thanks for the info. It way too late for me to save some cash now I'm all in...lmao! I have set up the following:

Veg

Growlab 80L
Silver star reflector
Light speed digi-pak special edition 1000 watt ballast with 600 watt hps (bulb comes with digital ballast)
ez clone 30

Flower

Growlab 240
2 Black star XXL reflectors
2 Light speed digi-pak special edition 1000 watt ballast with 1000 watt bulbs
Profilter carbon filter
8in fan
6in fan

I am in the aquarium biz and I have a bunch of t5's lying around. This is gonna be fun!

I think that you will find that the T5's are far superior for what you want to do. You will get much tighter internodal spacing, less heat, smaller power bill, etc. Have fun!

Plants stretch 200% - 400% during the first 3weeks of flowering. A common mistake is to over grow while in veg not realizing how much more they will grow during bloom.

I prefer to Veg with T5 for the reasons mentioned in the previous post. I like to keep my plants small and electricity affordable while in Veg.

You can buys these T5 fixtures with 4 or 8 bulbs that put out as much lumens as a 400HPS and use far less electricty then a HPS or MH bulb.

A T5 fixture would pay for itself in a couple of months from the lower electricity bill. 18hrs of HPS plus the associated cooling is a lot of electricity.

Wow - for someone to go out and spend ALL that money, just to ask such a simple question after it all.... AND to have the gall to be snappy at the reaction he gets for asking said naive question.

I think that all questions can be answered by going back and reading. Not asking people to find the information for you.

Honestly, if you don't know the difference between HPS and MH, you should have learned that first. Benig in the aquaruim "biz" would have taught you that, but...

HPS = red spectrum light = fall/ fading sunlight = flowering

MH = blue spectrum light = daylight = growth
