The oldest plant in this tent(rear left) is on day 7 of week 4 and the tent canopy is exploding(yea i know, im novice)...

Will it shock the plants very much to remove just the largest fan leaves that are getting in the way the most?

thanks for any advice

You better not take the leaves out. Plants use their leaves to catch as much light as they can, and that's what gives them energy to do all their processes. Even when you see huge fan leaves creating shadows under them, those leaves are doing good so better don't remove them ;)

I wouldn't be taking too many leaves off this at this point in the plants life.
They will slowly start to fall off anyways as the plants mature.

Training is best done before plants are put into flowering.

"day 7 of week 4" ?? what dat mean?

You are entering the defoliate vs no defoliate conundrum.
I say yes, defoliate. If youre ina fix for space, yes, take those big leaves off.. even into bloom further.. I've taken clones in the 4th week of bloom with no 'issues'. GL, they look very good.

Id suggest only taking whats needed to open up your buds to light if needed. Also try bending and twisting those fans vs removing. Less shock and still opens it up.

Skunkman defoliates the whole plant 1 week from harvest. :tiphat:

Hey there, Im a big fan (no pun intended) of defoliating in flower. Usually im pretty much done by week 4 but every week till then, once a week, I go through and take of all the large fans growing off the main branching that are blocking buds except for to top two, maybe three per branch. Secondary branches usually need less work. But Id say yeah go for it, its a weed, give those buds light, yoy can also compromise by tying sime of the branch down to the container to widen your structure a bit.

It might generally be considered bad practice - but you can still get good or great results in grows where fan leaves are removed.

I understand the incentive, you have an internode/ bud site that is shielded by a big leaf.

It took the plant a LOT of energy to make that leaf, and that leaf contains energy for the plant.

I think you can remove a small amount with near-zero effect.

e.g. removing 5% of the leaves.

Sort of like the plant had 20 apples worth of energy. You remove 5% of the fan leaves, it only has 19 apples worth of energy.

But it can grow more and if there are new bud sites that are now getting light, well if nothing else it can make the grower feel good. :woohoo:

St. Phatty, have you ever done a side by side, or a run with and a run without defoliating the same variety? In my experiences Ive seen only positives from defoliating, what negatives have you noticed?

There are lots of threads on here where there was side by sides done and even though it looked like the leaf removed plants were doing better then result was Yield and it lost in that category
Removal of lower leafs or in other terms pruning is good practice what i mean is sucker buds there what takes away the energy

In nature its common for pests to on average damage 30 percent of plants leaf mass so
one could remove 20 percent of lower leafs and with out so much stress remember them leafs are storing sugars and starches for plant so best to take little use the Tuck technique if leafs are covering a bud site

Slipnot, nice post, im sure its variety dependent. I'll only speak for the stuff in my garden. Your right on tucking and bending are great techniques.

I've stopped (trying) getting involved in this particular topic.. It's a personal thing.

I haven't done a side by side.

The only negative I've noticed is, it can be time consuming.
