Can Fan Max

Y

yamaha_1fan

Anyone using these? The specs show they pull 1708 CFM on a 12" which is more than the vortex 12" at 1140CFM.

They also say its capable of medium to high static pressure. Great. WTF does that mean to me?

I will be using one fan to cool 4 rows of 3 lights, or 12 hoods.

My local hydro store said that people didnt like the can fan max but I think that was more cause I had cash in hand for a filter/fan combo and he didnt have the can fan max to go with my filter

Noise is not an issue, just performance

I have the 14" Max.
Seems pretty damn sweet to me.
Still 1700 cfm but 1/2 the amps of the 12" Max and about 1/2 the rpm as well.
The 10" and the 14" are the best of the Max line.

I was wondering if yall that have the big max fans can tell me how you connected them up. I'm planning on getting a 10" but am not sure how they would connect to 6" hoods. Would i Be losing alot of cfm dropping down to 6".

What would be adequate for a 1k,4oo, and a can 66 scrubber? With about 10ft-15 of ducting,( 15 being and over estimate just in case a as room is 5x5 )
10" or 8" max fan.

Im gonna jump in on this one as well. I am interested in getting a 12'' max fan to exhaust two 6'' rows of 600w lamps. 4800w per 6'' row, totaling 9600w. My question to anyone who has used the fan is... Do they operate better under load as advertised? Will it be more efficent to use a plenum to distrubute air or will just using a 12'' to 2x6'' Y connecter suffice?

I've got a max 8 and max 12.. max 12 is a beast for sure. I wish I would have went 10 or 14 as I believe they are quieter.

I pull through 3 rows of lights with a manifold I made from sheet metal, foil tape, and 6" saddle taps. Its rough looking, but gets the job done.

high static pressure
I think that means it can handle a higher amount of resistance.

Max fans are definately the way to go due to their lower electricity usage over regular cans. more cfm - less wattage. 6" units I hear are coming out sometime this year and I believe the Max can fans and fans like these will take over the market eliminating regular inlines.

Ever seen one float a beach ball across the room with the fan held at an angle. I seen a video online once, and then my local shop demonstrated it. The airflow was very linear even without ducting. Amazing shit.

Here is a shot of how I've got mine rigged.

got the 12" today for 6 1Ks, 2 rows of 3. It's replacing a vortex 10" and fantech 8XL that were in line with each other. I am really looking forward to the increased cfms. Seems well built, but i haven't installed it yet.

I think that the 12" is overkill for most people. Properly calibrated, a 12" fan should be able to cool about 10-15 1k lights, if not more. Its definitely nice to overkill on the fan, however, with a little ingenuity (big word), i think that improving the ductwork in most people's systems will do a lot.

For instance, the people running 6" hoods, if they went up to 8" ductwork, their fan would work better, with less static pressure.

Could you clarify that a lil for me? youre saying that since I use ss2 hoods which have 6'' flanges for the ductwork if i put a 8'' to 6'' reducer on the hood itself and then 8'' ducting between hoods, i would gain efficency? How much efficency?

Are you pulling or pushing the air? It seems you may need a plenum because you can't just go y-split from 12" into two 6". Plus it sounds like you got two rows of eight 600w lights to cool. It'll be to much of a p.i.t.a. to put 8" ducting in between each hood. You'd have to buy two 8" to 6" reducers per light...$$$$$. I think you may wanna ask anybody out there if they know if a single 12" max-fan or any 12" inline can cool that type of setup.

Absolutely, 8" ducting has more overall area, to tell you how much, just look at the area of a circle. The formula is PI X R squared.

A 6" circle is about 28 inches square
a 8" circle is about 50 inches square

and just for shits and giggles, and for those 12" fan lovers
a 12" circle is about 113 inches square!~!~!~!

If your fan is having a hard time pulling through 6" ducting, try upgrading it to 8", to lessen the static pressure through the system. This may be enough to not have to buy another fan.

More good info and things to think about when designing air ducting systems.
Maybe we need a sticky database of this type of info on duct sizes and the area of each. I have noticed most ducting manufacturers will list the specs on the max amount of air flow that a given length can flow etc.. Then have a table of the percentage of air flow loss that reducers and bends cause.

Skunk420,

He wouldn't have to buy reducers, although that might be nice. He can simply tape the ducting to the exising 6" hole. Since we are talking flexible ducting, the reducer would not do anything here. Those reducers are good though for rigid duct, or maybe for the fan itself, like if one were to use an 8" fan on a 6" duct.

As for the 2 rows of 8 600's, I've read that a plenum system would be most effective for those.

His SS2 hoods are the 6" type and I am assuming I read it that he was thinking to put 8" ducting between his hoods that have 6" in/outs to help reduce the resistance that the 6" ducting may have when you got 8 hood in a row.
Forgot to mention I'm picking up a 10"max-fan soon I'll let you all know how it works.

The 10in max fan i have is like a jet turbine. you get your hand within 4 inches of it, it will suck it in and chop your fingers off.

hey, phillthty/ anyone with the max. Is the max 10" too much then for a can 66, 1k, and a 400? I seen the site says after some ducting and a filter the CFms drop to ~850. So that would be what, like 200 of that for cooling the one k ( I think I seen it was like 150cfm min on cooling a 1k) and then 100cfm for the 400. So that's like ~ 550cfm left over. So is that telling me it's overkill or is that telling me it will be able to clean my room a few times more per min. Is there anyway you would be able to give a comparison between a 10" max and 6" can/vortex fan sound and size wise? Highly debating getting this fan. Can get it for 299$ shipped 10"!

How do y'all run 12/14" fans? I never seen any ducting bigger than 8" at the hd or lowes

You get the bigger ducting from the HVAC supply house or you build something out of sheetmetal. Thanx everyone for the imput. It looks like a plenum may be in the works. Not something that Im thrilled about but then again i guess its the name of the game.

How big is your room?

The 6in vortex is lighter then the 10in max. They make a different sound so it is hard to compare. The vortex is a deeper note so the sound will travel through more mediums then the higher pitched max fan. I use the vortex to draw cool ac air from the flower room into the veg spot then back into flower. definitely overkill for what I am doing. I only have 800 total watts in veg, half being flouros. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

The area is 5x6ish with a tarp up but room is 5x9/10ft ish. Can 66 filter ~42lbs, 1k, 400w. All hoods are 6"

the 12" max moves some air. I am using 2 to cool 24 hoods and they work great

the plenum design works great and I highly suggest using it
