Can anyone help me identify these bugs?

I am experimenting with some cuttings in the "wal mart cloner" vermiculite wicking from water underneath, also in a couple random cups. I went to look at things and saw clusters of what looked like peat dust floating, then I saw some of the pieces flipping around. Took some out of the water and they go nuts - they can almost jump like fleas. The first pic is what the clusters look like and the second is at like 300X with a kids toy. Here are some observations.
1. the coloring is like that of a plastic worm (fishing lure) that is smoke color with shiny flakes in it
3. they have a broad head (about the same width as their mid section not narrow like thrips), medium length thick antennae
4. they have six legs all in the midsection
5. most have several small "hairs" coming off their rear but one appears to have two long ones. That one is a little larger than the others so maybe it is just a little more developed?

I changed the water out last night and there are more clusters. They must be in the vermiculite too b/c they havent returned to the cup. Sprayed some docktor doom on the surface and it knocked them out for now. I really don't want to ditch the cuts and need to find out if these guys are something I need to worry about - maybe they're good guys? Thank you in advance for any input. How come nothing ever happens to my garden that looks just like something on the net?

looks alot like thrip larvae, just black/dark...

that's what i was/am afraid of - but the pics i find of them show more tapering at the head and rear. the fact that theyre floating in the water and some types of springtails are semi aquatic is more evidence i think, plus there are some pics on the net that are pretty close.

dude im really a newb to pests, never had single one since few weeks ago when i discovered spidermites....i just saw that it resembles the shape of thrip...never even heard of spring tails...

Yeah, me too - except fungus gnats. I'm hoping that they are just the spring tails. I cant find anything in my soil or on the plants so my guess is that they arent thrips. I have that cup in quarantine and will watch to see what they develope into. It seems like they prefer to be in the water cause they dont climb out of the cup. I'ma float some debris in there to give them a rest if they want it and something to eat.
