camera suggestions

I want a decent quality camera for my projects. I wouldn't mind spending a few hundred bucks. I should say I would like to do macros eventually but I want a camera for regular pictures too. Im not a fan of buying something cheap and realizing that I wish I had bought something better. But im not gonna be a photographer so spending thousands is not an option.

I do have a digital microscope thinking it might be good for the macros, but I haven't got it out of the box yet.

So knowing I want regular pics, macro, and own this digi microscope, can someone point me in a good direction for cameras here?

Thanks for any ideas,

There are lot's of options, as I'm sure you've found. In the recent past I've picked up a couple of different cameras for general use and macros.

For a pocket camera, I bought a Panasonic LX7 and for a superzoom I got a Fuji HS50. Both do a good job on macros, the LX7 has limited zoom but is very portable and has a pretty amazing low-light lens. The Fuji has a manual zoom, which I like better than my previous powered-zoom, and I like the color better straight from the camera. Both will shoot RAW if you like playing with post-processing, and come with the software to do that. They both have pretty small sensors, so the image quality isn't going to be up to a DSLR, but they are also MUCH cheaper and more convenient. Either one can be had for around $350 or less if you shop carefully.

If you are looking on Amazon, be aware that their prices can fluctuate substantially over a period of a week or so (like $150!). BuyDig.com has pretty good pricing, as does Wolfe's Cameras (Wolfes.com).

A DSLR will certainly do a nice job. However, if you want the same range that one of the superzooms will give, you will have several thousand dollars tied up in the camera body and lens selection. My HS50 goes from a 24mm wide-angle to a 1000mm telephoto, + macro capability. Price out what it would cost for equivalent lenses and factor in the pain-in-the-ass of having to continually change the lenses out without contaminating the camera body with dust.....

I love playing with photography, but I got enough of that back in the 35mm film days.

Thanks bro, that's exactly the kind of info this tech dummy needs.
