I've been noticing that my brain doesn't seem to be as sharp as it once was. The other night while listening to some late night talk radio, there was a guest on this show who was talking about something called "Dual N Back" (the "Dual" refers to having to remember 2 different aspects...visual and auditory; the "N" is a variable on how far back you are required to remember) brain exercises. He also said that these were especially good for folks who have attention deficit disorder, which I've got. So, I decided to get on the internet and see what these brain exercises were all about.
There is a lot to them, no way can I give an adequate explanation here, you'll have to go read up on it like I did. But, after doing these exercises for the last 20 minutes, I must say that I am very impressed...by 2 things; one, holy shit has my minds ability to remember things gone down hill; and two, these are damn good brain calisthenics, frustrating, challenging, and in my opinion well worth spending 20-30 minutes a day to keep the mind in shape.
If you choose to give it a go, I would suggest that you start at the lowest level (1), and let the game control where you go from there...once you do well enough at level 1, the game will kick you up to level 2, and then if you are like me, it will kick you back down to level 1 when you suck at level 2. Hard for me to believe, but "N" back levels go all the way up to 30!
I'm not going to get into getting into posting scores and such to make this a competition, it ain't about scores. It's about keeping your mind healthy and effective at remembering, and as you get better and better at doing these exercises you will also get better at doing many other brain functions. After my first foray into the brain games, I saw a similarity between these game exercises and getting in shape physically...when you first start out trying to jog/run, if you are in less than ideal shape, you don't make it all the way around the track without stopping. My first results saw me starting at level 1, then getting advanced to level 2, then getting kicked back down to level 1 again....kinda like jogging for 50 yards, having to stop because you are so winded, starting jogging again after you catch your breath...you get the picture.
Here's the link, make sure to read the directions, and do some "demo's" and tutorials before starting out. It is very simple, but also quite confusing, kinda like doing different things with each of your hands at the same time.
