Conservative Democrat California Assmblywoman Joan Buchanan is trying to eliminate any medical marijuana businesses in this state through zoning laws. In fact she is pushing a bill through the legislature now to that effect.

This Tuesday, the California Assembly Committee on Public Health will debate a very controversial bill. Last week, Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) introduced AB 2650, which would create new statewide zoning restrictions on medical marijuana establishments. The bill is sponsored by the Peace Officers Research Association of California. The following three paragraphs contain the main points of California AB 2650:

“This bill would provide that no medical marijuana cooperative, collective, dispensary, operator, establishment, or provider, shall be located within a 1,000-foot radius of a school, public park, public library, religious institution, licensed child care facility, youth center, substance abuse rehabilitation center, or any preexisting medical marijuana cooperative, collective, dispensary, operator, establishment, or provider, as specified. By creating a new crime, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program.”

“No medical marijuana cooperative, collective, dispensary, operator, establishment, or provider who possesses, cultivates, or distributes medical marijuana pursuant to this article shall be located within a 1,000-foot radius of a school, public park, public library, religious institution, licensed child care facility, youth center, substance abuse rehabilitation center, or any preexisting medical marijuana cooperative, collective, dispensary, operator, establishment, or provider.”

“The distances specified in this section shall be the horizontal distance measured in a straight line from the property line of the school, public park, public library, religious institution, licensed child care facility, youth center, substance abuse rehabilitation center, or preexisting medical marijuana cooperative, collective, dispensary, operator, establishment, or provider, to the closest property line of the lot on which the medical marijuana cooperative, collective, dispensary, operator, establishment, or provider is to be located without regard to intervening structures.”

I like this part
"The bill is sponsored by the Peace Officers Research Association of California"

Wow, what a surprise, it's a pig based initative.
The only thing their research has shown them is how many of them are going to be out of work when we no longer need them to enforce BS MJ laws, that's why their panicking and coming up with bills like this.

1,000 feet? I piss 1,000 feet. That's like 300 steps, or maybe 4-5 minutes of walking. In Santa Cruz CA the Greenway Compassionate Collective is probably 1,000 from a school, 1,000 feet from a park, and 1,000 feet from another dispensary.

How awesome is that? LOL!

I agree that dispensaries have no place being close to parks or schools or rehab centers. 1,000 feet I would argue isn't far enough.

The title of this article couldn't be more wrong and misleading. No one is killing anything.

In AZ we're getting to vote for medical marijuana in November...in There's a similar law in our bill. Except its much more strict, saying the establishments can't be within 10 mile radius.

Incredibly stupid and reactionary, but absolutely predictable.

LEO unions are as bad as the prison guard unions in that respect.

LEO should stand for "Lazy Employment Officers", because "easy arrests" are what it's all about.

Or maybe "Less Education Ordered".

That one fits well, since cops are the only people in the country who, by order of the Supreme Court, can be discriminated against for scoring Too High on an intelligence test!

Since when are cops qualified scientists? Since when are their medical opinions valid?

Like most public employees, LEO want their job to be easy and uncomplicated.

Their advancement is predicated on the number of felony arrests, and across this country, there's no felony easier than possession of grass.

"conservative democrat" is NOT an oxymoron, but gets treated like one. there are only about 5 or 6 of them, you know. mostly in mid-west states where being anti-gun will get you sent home. can't believe she thought this would fly...
