Hi all
If you grew up around the bay back-in-the-day, you may have remembered this name. R.I.P.
Sad news for Cal fans this morning: The New Orleans Saints confirmed today that former Cal running back Chuck Muncie passed away from a heart attack on Monday. He was 60.
Muncie’s name is etched all over the Cal records books. The 6-foot-3 back — famous on campus and on the field for his bold glasses — ranks second in career rushing touchdowns (32), fourth in single-season yards (1,460) and fifth in career rushing yards (3,052).
His 15 games with 100-plus rushing yards ranks behind only Marshawn Lynch. Muncie even appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
In 1975, Muncie finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting to Archie Griffin and was drafted in the first round by the New Orleans Saints the following year. He played there until he was traded to San Diego in 1980. Although his playing time in New Orleans was short, he still remains fifth in the Saints’ all-time rushing records.
Sadly, Muncie’s professional career ended due to personal problems. He was suspended for the duration of the 1984 season after testing positive for cocaine, and a comeback in 1985 didn’t pan out. Selling cocaine put Muncie behind bars for 18 months in the late 1980s, but he spent the next two decades working with at-risk kids with his Chuck Muncie Youth Foundation. Among other services, his foundation provides free tattoo removals in exchange for proof of 40 hours of community service.
