It depends on which cal mag additive your using. A combination of epsom salts and powdered gypsum or calcium chloride should not affect ph. Millenium cal mag contains calcium hydroxide so the ph will rise. Shroomdr was having a terrible time with ph rising using this product. Cal mag plus contains both calcium and magnesium nitrate. These will cause a slight rise in ph. But probably what affects the ph is the uptake of the nitrate by the plant which releases oh- ions that will cause a rise in ph.
I could'nt have said it better myself. Although I will add through my own grows using cal-mag plus that if used with synthetic nutes (GH and the like) ph should stay about the same and with botnicare's nutes such as pure blend pro it seems to rise a little. This works in my favor since PBP drops ph pretty low. Thats right blackvelvet I stopped using the lucas formula! Millenium cal mag does raise ph a good bit but it also does not contain the (N) that botnicare stuff does so really if you need a cal-mag supplement either will do but one has a n boost and one does not.
Edit: wow were on the same page about 1 issue blackvelvet Hell must be freezing over!
Thank-You gentlemen Blackvelvet and HazeToker, one continued query would be if as in my case the nute is GH and Cal-Mag makes pH go up is that because Magnesium uptake occurs at a higher pH? I saw a chart earlier that another fellow provided and it indicated uptake of Mag at a higher range than mid 5.--pH. Also in my rez is Botanicare Silica Blast, and GH Kool-Bloom. But the pH won't come down! Oh screw it! I decided to dump and restart fresh. Thanks anyway!
Well it is doing it again. It responded very gradually to the pH Down adjuster. It seemed to have made the water a little cloudy and the roots seemed to have some yuk on them. Water seemed to clear a bit with pH adjustment. Makes me worry. Any other comments? It is Millenium Cal-Mag Max.
Greetings Soul Brother, Fellow Grower, thank you for your response. The answer is that I do use tap water,pH 6.5, generally normal tap water. I think I found out the answer to my prob. I had been keeping the pH at about 5.5 or 5.6. Then a fellow showed me a chart of nute uptake at different pH - Magnesium uptake happens at a higher pH than I was having. It like high 5 or 6 and up a bit. So I inadvertantly wasn't allowing uptake.
Holy Cows Batman.
