Hey my girls are showing definite calcium and mag deficiencies. I saw botanicare cal-mag has 2-0-0 and they definitely DONT need nitrogen right now. Would molasses be a safer/cheaper alternative?
Blackstrap Molasses for sure...I use Brer Rabbit sparingly,1tsp/ gallon in soil, even my veggies and houseplants love it...
Cal Mag + is a great product also.
Good Luck

EDIT** Wouldn't suggest molasses in systems where it would directly touch the roots ie. DWC. You can, but it is messy and can be bad news if you go (slightly) overboard...
I am more than ever looking for easily available nutes and supplements because I'm not very close to a store and I don't want to use the mail. Molasses was debated here and there and I tried it. I dumped about 1/4 of a 16 oz bottle into a 25 gal res and SURE ENOUGH there was a noticeable effect. The plants were vivid green soon, but the rez was coughing up bubbles and smells and this weird crusty hardened foam around the top of the rez (I keep it topped off to the point of almost leaking over, so I can estimate each day's consumption)
Maybe I put too much (confusing fl oz with cc's???) or maybe molasses is not meant for hydro.
I read on another forum (can't remember) that molasses is very good in soil, but that the minerals and molecules in the molasses are mostly for feeding soil based beneficial bacteria.
I wish I was smarter and could explain it better, anyway BEFORE anyone adds to a hydro system DO MORE RESEARCH
They are in no way the same thing. Cal Mag IS calcium and magnesium and you say you have a deficiency. Adding sugar vs what they are deficient in solves your problem how exactly?
If you are using RO or Distilled water you NEED Cal Mag to replace certain minerals etc. The amount of nitrogen in it is not enough to cause an issue. I'm sure of this because I've been doing it for four years and use Cal Mag as one third of my total recipe all the way through flower. My last plant weighed in at 14.9 oz. so yes, I'm positive it works.
Assuming yourr ph is correct and not locking things out......if you are deficient in Calcium and magnesium use Cal Mag, not molassas.
agrre with the previous growers. Use cal mag, if that's indeed what is needed, molasses is not a substitute. I do use molasses myself. In flowering I use 2 tablespoons per gallon. I feed > water, water-molasses, nutes-molasses. So molasses two out of each three waterings. Nice sweet buds.
argh okay, i just read that molasses has cal and mag in it. but probably not enough. i say i dont need N because my plants are very nute sensitive, they are still recovering from being burned in FFOF. I just hope the 2-0-0 doesnt lead to more burning issues.
as above, it costs next to nothing (for a box). you could even get a small bottle off CA 15 (liquid calcium from bio nova). that would be your cal/mag sorted for very little $
I had rust colered spots on a couple of plants, one was pretty bad, 2-3 were showing the light green color of a mag def. Bought a bottle of cal-mag, 3-4 days later, beautiful lush green plants! I'll always recommend cal-mag cause I KNOW it works!
