I would kill the breaker and tape them good with electrical tape for a quick fix,I'd probably replace some fixtures and wiring in the longterm. If you cant kill the breaker or its a pain, tape up your fingertips, then tape up the wire insulation well.Thats real goofy man,an electrician for years but I've never ever told anyone to tape their fingers lol it just came to me for some odd reason, not a bad idea but not as good as killing the power at the breaker.Tape your fingers lol god thats good..Thorodee you listenin to this shit lol
Ummmm Tape your fingers? DO IT RIGHT DO IT ONCE! Your risking a fire I would do whatever it takes to prevent a fire which is a major Fire/Poliece attracter. If anything ware rubber gloves. I have some super long thick ones that I got at HD to clean my saltwater tank. They would work. But I still think you should fix the entire problem and replace the wire. It's like a map leading to your grow otherwise.
i think you should submit the "taped finger" idea to ECM ballastman.
ECM being electrical contractor magazine.
they have a section in the magazine w/ little helpful tidbits like that. it puts a smile on my face every month when i read them.
most people would wear gloves, but it just might make the cut.
as far as your cracking insulation, the BX that you (and alot of people) have is notorious for this.
the insulation dry rots from the ambient heat, then pretty much falls apart (when you move the wires around).
i would suggest taping it up as well.
then try not to touch it anymore if you dont have to.
the more you fiddle with this older wire, the more the insulation will fall off.
but have no fear, 99 out of 100 times, the wire inside the sheathed part of the bx is fine still.
by sheathed i mean the conductors IN the metal part of the wire, not IN the box.
general rule of thumb to remember, whenever you work with live wires, keep your weak hand in your back pocket while you work. this way, worst case scenerio, you only shock yourself thru your hand, not your whole body.
if you touch a live wire w/ say, your right hand, and your left hand is grounded out on the box. the electricity will pass thru your body headed to the ground( right to left hands).
whereas if you only have one hand touch a live wire and ground out on the box, the juice only passes thru your hand.
most electrocution deaths occur when current passes thru your heart on the way to ground.
a good jolt can be enough to cease your ticker.
hope you all learned something today, next lesson will be ...........
Go for the tape on your fingers. Really, cut the breaker off, fix it right, whatever it takes and live a while. No good grow comes from dead growers unless you use them for fertilizer.
Your an old man thorodee, when I started bx was the standard mc cable and a insulated ground came later.Even back then when I used to take the little metal strip and wind it tight around the sheath to try and keep continuity,I knew the whole thing was just a bit bogus lol.I'll be damned though every time I took a reading from hot to the box,I had continuity and a ground.Probably for a good year or so!
