By 2045 'The Top Species Will No Longer Be Humans'

Reality becomes more like science fiction more and more every day. Make it to 2045, and you just might live forever.

"Today there's no legislation regarding how much intelligence a machine can have, how interconnected it can be. If that continues, look at the exponential trend. We will reach the singularity in the timeframe most experts predict. From that point on you're going to see that the top species will no longer be humans, but machines."
These are the words of Louis Del Monte, physicist, entrepreneur, and author of "The Artificial Intelligence Revolution." Del Monte spoke to us over the phone about his thoughts surrounding artificial intelligence and the singularity, an indeterminate point in the future when machine intelligence will outmatch not only your own intelligence, but the world's combined human intelligence too.

The average estimate for when this will happen is 2040, though Del Monte says it might be as late as 2045. Either way, it's a timeframe of within three decades.

"It won't be the 'Terminator' scenario, not a war," said Del Monte. "In the early part of the post-singularity world, one scenario is that the machines will seek to turn humans into cyborgs. This is nearly happening now, replacing faulty limbs with artificial parts. We'll see the machines as a useful tool. Productivity in business based on automation will be increased dramatically in various countries. In China it doubled, just based on GDP per employee due to use of machines."

"By the end of this century," he continued, "most of the human race will have become cyborgs [part human, part tech or machine]. The allure will be immortality. Machines will make breakthroughs in medical technology, most of the human race will have more leisure time, and we'll think we've never had it better. The concern I'm raising is that the machines will view us as an unpredictable and dangerous species."

Del Monte believes machines will become self-conscious and have the capabilities to protect themselves. They "might view us the same way we view harmful insects." Humans are a species that "is unstable, creates wars, has weapons to wipe out the world twice over, and makes computer viruses." Hardly an appealing roommate.

He wrote the book as "a warning." Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more capable, and we're adopting it as quickly as it appears. A pacemaker operation is "quite routine," he said, but "it uses sensors and AI to regulate your heart."

A 2009 experiment showed that robots can develop the ability to lie to each other. Run at the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems in the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne, Switzerland, the experiment had robots designed to cooperate in finding beneficial resources like energy and avoiding the hazardous ones. Shockingly, the robots learned to lie to each other in an attempt to hoard the beneficial resources for themselves.

"The implication is that they're also learning self-preservation," Del Monte told us. "Whether or not they're conscious is a moot point."

Alright...some computer programer better start inventing the silicon/digital equivalent of LSD25 to feed our future planetary rulers pronto. Will probably take a good chunk of time to invent this, so they better start now. It seems like I read stories like this every day now.

This week I watched a show about the smart robots that fill our Amazon orders, another about robots that they are building to 3D print houses, and yet another about how BioInk (whatever that is) will soon be used to 3D print human organs.

Crazy times we live in, but in 100 years? Who knows what this world will look like.

Science/technology is advancing at an ever increasing rate. Little kids alive today could quite possibly live "forever", as human body parts will be replaceable. Stem cell research, which has been held back by the uber religious, will be unleashed. When a child is born, stem cells from umbilical coeds will be banked, along with blood, plasma, etc. When disease strikes, stem cells will be remedy #1. Organs and body parts will be re-grown, or 3D printed. Scientists announced a couple weeks back that they are on schedule to 3D print a human liver within one year. Other organs will follow. Transplants will be matter of fact, with no rejection of foreign tissue. We were born a bit too early to benefit in the way that today's kids will, but there will be major advances in medicine when stem cells and 3D printing are combined to regenerate our bodies. They have already successfully 3D printed food. It's like the food replicators on Star Trek. Soon all food will be able to be 3D printed.

Eventually, you will be able to 3D print ganja. Then, no more growing!
They will have 3D printing vending machines, that will print any strain you want.
As far as machines "taking over"? Not going to happen, as we can always unplug them.

There is no doubt that it's real. It's just a matter of how soon it happens. 2040-2045 being a very popular estimate by people who research such things though. I have read that opinion for quite a few years now.

I don't know Retro....I wouldn't be counting on that. Before Tesla died he had been working on a method of transporting electricity through the air, no wires needed. If Tesla thought it was possible, it likely is.

Besides....won't be long before AI becomes mobile, gets together with robot technology, and bango presto hands to plug the unplugged back in (whilst operating on battery backup).

I'd say there is a 50/50 chance the human race has a nasty little dystopia waiting for it.

That's the reaction of a lot of people that aren't in the business. It seems like science fiction to them, but it's very real. With proper planning and precautions it doesn't have to be a threat, which is why it's an important issue.

Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking both spoke out about it this year.

"Worth reading 'Superintelligence' by Bostrom," suggests Musk in a Tweet. "We need to be super careful with AI," he continues, "potentially more dangerous than nukes."

Earlier this year Professor Stephen Hawking spoke up about the film Transcendence. This film features a world in which artificial intelligence has effectively taken over regular operations, putting humans in a lesser role. "Transcendence looks at the implications of artificial intelligence, but are we taking AI seriously enough?"

"It's tempting to dismiss the notion of highly intelligent machines as mere science fiction," suggested Hawking, on the film Transcendence, "but this would be a mistake, and potentially our worst mistake in history.
