Buzzing from Canfan w/ controller

what up macguyvers? i have a 6" canfan attached to a speedster fan speed controller followed by a duct muffler. when the fan is on without the controller, there is no buzzing, only loud whooshing jet engine sound. on low to medium speed WITH the controller, the fan makes a buzzing noise, but no jet noise. is there anyway to lower the buzzing or do i just have to deal with it. btw, all this shit is in a hydrohut original.

I think its in the controller. There are some controllers that work for this and some that make the buzzing. Just recalling what I read. Try a search

I had been told much the same. I have a 6" elicent inline, same jet engine problem. I originally used a router speed control, caused the buzzing. Was told if i bought the fan controller from elicent it would fix that. Purchased that one and i still get that buzzing sound, although reduced iirc. I've since switched to a stanley blower, because my air movement needs are lower now.

Theres probably a controller out there that will work, darn things are elusive though. The one thing that makes a difference, on my manufactures website they have 2 styles of controller, potentiometer with wheel, and steps with a transformer. The transformer would be quieter while bulkier. Also nice to see elicent thought about growers at least a little bit. On the technical specifications of their metal inline fans, at the bottom with the pictures of applications, they have a couple grow lights being vented out the side of the house :joint:

edit:
something like this is rated for 4A and should work well. I've no clue as to the quality of that website though, but i'm fairly sure thats what we are looking for. This is also variable instead of stepped which is a big plus.

edit2:
some much better prices on ebay, sorta. Look for "variac" or "variable autotransformer" Also here is a page from a so called "fan collector" about speed controllers.

controllers suck your gonna have to deal with the buzz..... or get a fan thats smaller / less noise

btw that fan muffler should be butted up with the fan to work properly..kinda defeating the purpose by adding that duct in between them.

the buzzing is not the condensator(only seen that related to cars, not AC motors, although i see it refered on wikipedia as an old way of saying capacitor), its the motor running oddly due to the fact that a potentiometer chops up the wave form to attain the lower voltage. A transformer provides a much smoother, proper wave form that shouldn't buzz. You'll know the difference because a 120V transformer weighs about 8-10lbs.

Heres approx what happens with the regular lightweight speed controllers. Its turning your fan on and off 120 times a second, and thats your buzz
