Burping the jars

I have some nugs that I dried for 4 days and then put into mason jars. I have had them in the jars for seven days now. Every day I open the jars, twice a day, for 30 minutes. How many days/weeks should I open the jars for? When can I stop opening the jars?

For me dry/cure time can vary depending on the season and temp/humidity outside/in my house.

If you want to be exact check out the thread "a perfect cure every time" and grab one of those tiny hygrometers that fit into the jar. Other than that, it's kinda a judgement call you gotta make. Does the jar smell musty/is the air thick when you unlid it? Does it smell dry, cold, scentless? Does it smell like dryed apples or fresh cut grass? Those are the things I ask myself when I open up my jar, to determine when to open next and for how long.

I typically burp once daily for 10ish min, for about 6-7 days. Then once a week for 2-3 weeks, then seal them. Again, it's a judgement call you gotta make yourself. You'll get more comfortable with your decision making each time you harvest.

Remember, most outdoor grown bud you see isn't even cured, and a lot of that stuff is still plenty potent and tasty. Cure is very important to reach top grade, but it isn't exactly as hard to do right.

it is my understanding that you are supposed to gently tumble the buds when you burp the jar. this allows air to reach to every spot of the buds that would have otherwise blocked in moisture, risking mold. ive heard of peoples entire crops going to bust because they burped, but forgot to tumble

That sounds more like jarred but forgot to dry. If you are risking mold after you jar your buds you are jarring way to early IMHO. I find my best flavors come out when I don't jar the bud until it is fully dry. I used to use the burping thing to finish drying my buds but never got good flavor that way. Puting them in the jars when they are actually dry however, gets good scents after only a couple days of burping the jar. Then when it smells good after opening the jar, you just seal it and wait. When bud is well dried it will seem overly dry. That is where most people make their mistake I think. Of course the reality is that the outside IS overly dry and the inside of the buds are too moist. Jar curing starts by equalizing the moisture content throughout.

You can close up the jars once the stems are dry enough to snap when you bend them. The buds should still have some moisture in them, if they are brittle they are overdry.

The only way to really know if you are the right level of dryness is to jar it up and give it a day. After the moisture equalizes you will know what you have. My thing recently is instead of just doing the burp thing if I wasn't quite dry, I now pull it out of the jar and back to the drying area to finish. I find that attempting to jar and burp moist weed just seals in the hay. I would much rather be too dry and throw a fan leaf in the jar to bring moisture back up if I have too. I am a relatively new grower... little less than 2 years now. This has been one of the hardest things to get a good feel for, but one of the most critical steps to having really fine mj.

I've just been removing my bud from the jars completely. I empty it all out (gently of course) into the cardboard tray that the jars came in. After 1-2 hours I put everything back in the jars.

I personally remove the buds from the jars for 10mins or so, depending on how moist they still are. I think it just help to speed up the total dry time and get the jars to the actual sealed cure.

I hang dry for 4-12 days depending on plant/bud size then jar the nugs with burping for about two weeks unless that green wet smell is gone. When that smell is gone close them, I usually check my buds once a week or so, not all but one sitting at the top. I cure for 4wks to sell, 8wks to whenever my jars are empty for my personal stash. But its all variable unless you have a hygrometer like someone said. So unless your going to buy one just trust your gut feeling, you will notice the chances in the smell
