Bugs in DWC

I opened my bucket in my dwc today and bugs flew out. They look like gnats. What can i do to get rid of these bugs, and make sure it doesnt happend again

mosquito dunks, or something containing BTI ...aka bacillus thuringiensis. I would do a res change as soon as they are gone.

Nah - those things are always around... could even be fungus gnats (the kind that hang out in wet drains).

Only way to keep them out is to sterilize everything and never come from outside into the grow room (as some can be airborne, land on you and be transferred into the grow room).

Again, nothing to worry about...but if you're wanting a sure what to get rid of them, that would be it.

I just went through a nasty infestation of gnats. 6 mosquito dunks in one month did not help out much. Some things that helped a little were
1)safer spray
2)fly strip sticky tape
3)raw potatos, cut a few slices, put on top of your medium (thats where I noticed most of em), they are attracted to the potato, lay their larvae on it, toss the slices after 24ish hours, repeat as needed
4)sprinkle a little garlic powder, not too much, it sure is stanky, it also helps a bit with odor control
5)keep your grow room clean

Hey GNATROL is what u need... it is SPECIFICALLY for gnats which is what u have... gnatrol will rid u of those suckers in about 1 wk.... After that... u may want to keep it around in case u ever see those suckers reappear

change your rez and seal it so no ins for the nats...get a sticky trap...dont put a mosquito dunk in your rez.

Have a small pint shipped to you... its NOT a cannabis specific product.. IN FACT most ppl that use it ARE NOT pot growers..

peroxide works wonders in res. run 3% right off the shelf at 5ml perliter... 4 days later repeat...

soil isnt that easy beause you usually dont want to over water.
i do preventative measures to keep them out.
knowing the life bug helps... 1 fem 3to 300 eggs for up to 8 days/
eggs hatch in 4 days/ now the bad boys start larve eat live roots/ the more sterile the soil the more damage/ 4 days for larve / then pupa for 3~7 days and poof more pro blems.

i use bit in all my waterings and i have 2inches of

you do get that these things lay thier eggs as close to the stem as they can. if you dont tend to them they can lower yeild considerably.

just run the peroxide like i said and you will be ok.
btw...to use bit nmosq plunks ....i use 1/2 to 5 gals but you must break it up and let it set 24hrs.plus you must repeat in4days. for hydro i can not stress peroxide enough... i think theres more on peroxide in the co~co threads.

The mosquito dunks have the same strain of BT as Gnatrol. They take a while to break down though. I put a couple in each rez or break them up and sprinkle onto of soil in each pot if your not doing hydro. I also added the no pest Hot Shot strips to kill the adults. Within 3 months all dead- haven't seen them in like a year. THis was the ONLY thing that worked for me. Everyone says the Hot SHot stips kill mites. They didn't kill my mites but did the gnats.

This method ABSOLUTELY works... however it will wipe out any BENIFICIALS u have going... such as pirahnaa Tranatula Rhizotonic all the ZYMES.. so if your not using those products the above method will be fine!!

However if you ARE using any of the above products or products similar... just go with GNATROL... the no pest strips work remarkably well too... put a few on the ground around your pots... will work to wipe out adults and works WONDERS with PREVENTION..

very true BB is!!

i am all soil now. i used the peroxide w/coco.

i would wait about an hour after using peroide then replace nutes an others by re watering.

fungus larve cant live in water. been awhile, but i would not put it in res...i would make a ph water peroxide mix...run it through..,wait hour...then run res... have to repeat.
so glad to be back in just soil...

Safer brand Catapiller Killer is what you want for your plants. Just make up a batch in a bucket and dip your roots in. Catapiller killer is inert to everything but catapillers and other larvas. Only dip in your roots and then let stand for a min or two so the bugs soak up the juice. Next, get a piece of plastic over the entry to your DWC so no bugs can sneek back in.
